Copper engraved map from the Arctic to northern South America with a roccoco cartouche. " Noteworthy for its depiction of California (and New Albion) as an island, separated from the mainland by the "Gulf of California or Red Sea." The North West is largely unexplored, labeled simply "PARTS UNKNOWN"; there is much detail in the southwest, with locations of numerous Spanish settlements, extending through Mexico and into northern South America. (14 3/4 x 18 1/2 in.), with a small blank margin all round. An lovely clean example, with a little aging at edges o/w very good condition.
