12mo, 128pp, b&w illus throughout. Dark green cloth cover with color illustration tipped on to front cover and title in gilt above it. No title on spine, which is lightly rubbed at top and base. Lower edges and corners also lightly rubbed. Internally, a few scattered notations in margins, and pages very lightly toned. Owner's inscription, Ketchikan Alaska, dated March 22, 1905 on ffep. This is the story of a model native Indian settlement at Metlakahtla Island, British Columbia, and of the missionaries who served there, beginning with William Duncan, who worked with the Tsimshean tribes. Duncan notes, "The idea they entertain of God is that he is a great Chief. They call Him by the same term as they do their chiefs, only adding the word for above: thus, 'shimauget' is chief and 'lakkah' above; and hence the name of God with them is Shimauget Lakkah'."
