James Dwight Dana was one of the most important early American advocates of Darwinism; this work is considered to be the primary mineralogical reference and is referred to as the "mineralogist's bible". (Edward H. Kraus, 'A Notable Centennial in American Mineralogy, Vol. 23, pp. 145-148, 1938). Large 8vo, lxiii, 1134 pp, two Appendices; First Appendix: x, 75pp. Second Appendix: xi, 114pp. Illustrated with over 1400 figures. One quarter dark brown leather and cloth binding, with title in gilt on spine (A System of Mineralogy). Spine is gently rubbed, with gilt of title only slightly dimmed. Internally, very light scattered fox spotting, primarily to end papers. Small owner bookplate inside front cover. The sixth edition 'was popular for over 50 years 'due to the meticulous care with which it was prepared, the wonderful freedom from errors' ' (Julian C.
