Scenery of the East India Islands, Etc. A Series of Views of the Most Remarkable Localities Celebrated for Picturesque Beauty of Historical and Other Associations. Exquisitely Engraved by Cooke, from Original Drawings. Longman, Hurst... London, no date (plates dated 1811-13). Oblong 8vo, (iv) title & index & 26 copper engraved plates. Stiff paper lettered wrappers, decorative border. Orig. cloth spine, plates now loose inside. Covers lt. browned & rubbed at edges, some plts with lt. fox spots & marginal tears o/w generally very good. A fascinating collection of engravings after different artists - Webber, E.H. Locker, Leseuer, some signed. All engraved by George Cooke & of South Seas subjects. The views include Isle de France, St. Helena, Tonga & the Friendly Isles (Peron), Rotterdam Island, Madeira (E.H. Locker), Batavia (Alexander), Kerguelens Land (Webber), Isle of Bourbon, Tahiti, Sandwich Islands (Webber), New Zealand, New Guinea, Marquesas, and a view of Sydney & the mouth of the Parramatta after Leseuer. The 26 views appear to have been published in J. Pinkerton's momentous "General Collection of the Best & Most Interesting Voyages & Travels..." 17 vols 1808-14 [Ferguson 473]. Here, however, is a hitherto unrecorded separately issued book featuring those plates. It is unrecorded in the National Union Catalogue, British Museum Catalogue, Ferguson, the National Maritime Museum Catalogue or Hill, under either Pinkerton or the title.
