Description

A collection of 29 letterheaded invoices from Melbourne merchants including David Masterston & Co., Grice Sumner & Co., Curcier & Adel, McCallum Neill & Co., John McGee & Co., James McKenzie & Co., and Bligh & Harbottle, to a client named William Johnstone of Launceston. Johnstone was a trader of wine & spirits, and arrived in Launceston in 1842. His firm became known as Johnstone & Wilmot, when Johnstone's son went into partnership with the son a Tasmanian governor. Items purchased include rum, Best French Coloring, port, champagne, sherry, whiskey, brandy, marsala, and herring. The names of the ships on which the goods were transported is noted at the bottom of some invoice and includes: the Black Swan, Derwent, Tamar, and Mercury. Invoices written on blue paper and cream paper; some 8 x 10 1/2 in and some measuring 8 x 6 in. Very good condition.
