Description

Ca. 1910 b&w photo with hand written title on verso. Yuan Shih Kai (or Shikai) was a general & politician involved in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor; he was the first President of the Republic of China, and held that position from 1912 to 1916. The b&w photograph was taken in northern China, and shows a line of men in traditional garb standing in line in order to read a proclamation posted on the massive stone gateway. Some notations in black at top of photo; numbers written on verso, o/w very good. 5 x 4 in.
