These 4 tomes make up Nicolas' most important publication, with the use of George Baxter's wonderful color printing and the liberal usage of gold highlight make this a magnificent work. Muir (in his bibliography of color plate books) comments "it is doubtful whether the technical quality of these prints could be surpassed today"; he also praises the use of gold leaf as "truly magnificent " (Muir 152).4 vols. Internally, a sparkling copy, with one exception; the frontisppiec of the young Queen Victoria has detached and is hipped at the edges- She is however present and in wonderful condition and color. Bound in original half red morocco and cloth boards; spine with raised bands and 6 compartments, gilt tooled & decorated, a.e.g., marbled boards with some rubbing at edges, two spine bottoms chipped, some marking to the cloth boards.
