Anti-Communist volume on Formosa, with many b&w photographs by the American known as one of the founding photographers (1908 - 1997) of Life magazine who later was recruited to the Naval aviation photographic unit which documented major World War II invasions. Many striking black images of Formosan life, including farming, rice, pineapple & tea cultivation, living conditions for families and children, industrial production, and military forces & training. From the preface: "Today only the US Navy, and back of it, the threat of American military support for the Nationalists should the Reds invade their island sanctuary, prevents an immediate settlement by force". Quarter black cloth with illustrated boards. B&w photograph of drilling Formosan soldiers at front cover; title in black. Covers rubbed at edges; internally very slt rippling top edges.
