Description
Lindsay, Norman. The Magic Pudding. The Adventures of Bunyip Bluegum. Angus & Robertson, Sydney 1918, 1st edition. 4to (9x11 1/2"), 172pp, color frontispiece and illustrations throughout by Norman Lindsay. The true 1st edition in dust jacket. Orig. cloth-backed cream boards lettered in brown. This is the very scarce true 1st edition, with green "A & R" endpapers & a maroon cloth spine, titled in gilt. Orig. brown paper dust jacket lettered in dark brown, with pictorial illustration by Lindsay laid down. The very slightest of wear on lower dj corners, very faint shadow of the dj illustration on the front board. The nicest copy of this book we have ever beheld, and a classic of Australiana. Bunyip Bluegum and his friends Bill Barnacle (a humanized koala) and Sam Sawnoff (a penguin) join in adventures to keep hold of the "Cut-an'-come again puddin'", who changes from steak and kidney pie, to apple dumpling pudding at the holder's wish, and never runs out. Re-issued in the Depression in America, where the appeal of a never-ending pie must have been inviting. "The book is spontaneous and alive, the illustrations reinforcing the text, and the characterization brilliantly realized" (Muir). Issued in a grand format that has handsomely withstood the 87 years since its publication. Printed in large format on the highest quality art paper. Muir, 4263. The only sad note about this book is that it's clear a child never enjoyed this copy.
