British pupil's exercise book, with many pages devoted to geography, and an early map of Australia with a somewhat confused border to Queensland, which is labeled on the map as "York Peninsula". Haley Hill, the English school where the owner of the workbook was a student, is located near Halifax, in Yorkshire; the town's wealth came from the cotton, wool and carpet industries. The hand drawn map of Australia is dated Sept. 29th, 1859, and includes the territories labeled in ink, including Western Australia, North Australia, York Peninsula, South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria. Locations on the map labeled in ink include York, Encounter B., Melbourne, C. Howe, Sydney, and Gulf of Carpentaria. Coastal towns are added in pencil, and quite amusing; Morton B. (Moreton Bay), Byren (Byron Bay), Townsend (Townsville), Glocester, Sandwich, Grafton, Flattery, Medville and York (all sic). Other pupils' names recorded in the workbook include Tom Godley, Eddie Carr, and James Sandler. Some of the writing exercises reveal a strongly Eurocentric point of view: "At the present day Europe is still unquestionably the first of civilizing continents. Nowhere on the surface of our planet has the mind of man risen to a sublimer (sic) height, nowhere has man known [as] well how to subdue nature and to make her the instrument of intelligence. The nations of Europe to which we all belong not only represent the highest intellectual growth to which the human race has ever attained, but they rule already over nearly all the best parts of the globe and are preparing to push their conquests farther still." Much material on European countries, products, scripture, grammar, spelling, arithmetic, maps and drawings. With the teacher's corrections in red, some very harsh: "You do not appear to be able to command language ... the writing also is disgraceful - and, on the whole, the essay is not at all creditable to you."4to, not paginated, 136 leaves, largely with written text, the last quarter of maps (approx. 12) and portraits of dogs, clearly more to the student's taste. Maps include two of Palestine, India, France (2), England, Cape Colony, Yorkshire, Canaan (2), China. Quarter brown cloth and marbled boards, handwritten label at front cover. Spine and boards rubbed; internally very good.

One page handwritten letter on blue stock, dated 24th December 1855, sent on the "Lightning" via Liverpool, to Messrs. Fisher & Co. Boston, concerning shipments of American tobacco to Australia. This is the period of the Victorian gold rush; possibly the tobacco was destined for the gold fields. The writer names specific brand names such as "Smooth" and "Metropolis", their cost per pound, and their quality. "Smooth" brand "turned out in quality equally as bad as your shipment of the same brand did via "Hamlet". It will probably undergo the necessary process of inspection this week, as did the first lot of "Smooth", when we shall have it surveyed and send you a certificate". The letter also mentions drafts on the Union Bank of Australia. Wilkinson Brothers was successful enough to be housed in 1850 in the same premises in Macquarie Place, Sydney as the American consulate. By 1860 the firm had set up steam sawmills and an "American Warehouse" in Melbourne. With the address on the verso, and three stamps, one for "New York Apr 13, Am Packet"; the second "Australian Packet, Liverpool, Mr24, -55"; and the third "Melbourne, Victoria, Dc 26 1855". The scarce hardcover 1909 edition, subtitled "A Guide to Outback Travellers" and "Dedicated to the Prospectors of Western Australia", with the 1980 reprint. This is a guide on a wide range of survival strategies in the bush, with a strongly racist attitude towards Aboriginals. Topics covered include camping alone, camels and packs, game, entering the interior, care of horses, mules, antidotes to various bites, "native treachery", tribal customs and "solution of the Native "Question". The author writes, "My suggestions are intended for the benefit of prospectors and others who have not had a varied experience outside the fences, and are given with a view of trying to prevent further disasters amongst wild blacks, which, since the strictures of Dr. Roth, have become most appalling." Dr. Walter Edmund Roth, Chief Protector of Aborigines in Queensland, had chaired a 1904 Royal commission which led to the 1905 Act which declared that all Aboriginal persons were wards of the state, and gave the Chief Protector the power to remove children from their families and place them in custodial care.8vo, 68pp, 8 (of 12) plates, LACKS 4 plates, with one image lacking the lower half. With previous owner name, owner stamp and owner printed labels at ffep. Inner hinge starting. Blue gilt cloth covers rubbed, inner hinge starting, quite loose. The paperback reprint in fine condition, Mervyn Meggitt's copy; signed by him on the ffep. Meggitt was an Australian anthropologist noted for his work on Papua New Guinea and aboriginal Australia.

You will also distinguish what appears to sound like a man hammering a fence, a water pump in action, a Dog barking the warning cry of a White Cockatoo, the chuckle of a domestic Fowl and a man whistling for his Dog." From the library of Theodora Cope, one of the founders of the Cornell Ornithology Laboratory, who photographed birds throughout the Southern Hemisphere with her father Francis Cope in the late 1920s. The five maps from Hall's imaginary voyage to Terra Australis Incognita, the EARLIEST FICTITIOUS VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA. Hall frames his voyage by relating the feats of Columbus, Drake & Magellan, and references their discoveries (the Straits of Magellan are clearly marked) to introduce his moral allegory describing a voyage to the great southern unknown continent. Sometimes seen as a prototype for Swifts "Gulliver's Travels", it is the story of Marcus Brittanicus and his 30-year stay in Terra Australis Incognita, a land consisting of four areas - one inhabited by gluttons, another by fools, a third by thieves and the fourth, Shee-landt, by women. Hall was a Cambridge-educated priest with a liking for verse and 'pungent' satire, who at an early stage in his career incurred the wrath of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who in 1599 ordered the burning of his satires on the ground of licentiousness. The text refers to 'Shee-landt' and the island of "Double-sex Ile", whose hermaphrodite inhabitants dress in a combination of men's and women's cloth and bear such names as Mary-philip or Peter-alice. It is clear why the Archbishop of Canterbury would be incensed. The maps are unsigned, but believed by Hind to be the work of Kip, and are most interesting. There is a 'general chart' bearing a resemblance to Ortleius's "Maris Pacifici", the first map of the Pacific Ocean, with a large unknown land occupying the bottom half of the map, while the top half has reasonable representations of the continents of North & South America (Virginia; C. de la Florida; California; Rio Grande; Patagones; C. de la Victoria; Peru; Brasilia; Saribano) Africa (Promontor Bone Spei; Monomotapa; Auzica; Abassia) , Asia (Malacca; Sian; Narfinga; Smagar; Maliupar; C. Comori) and parts of Europe. It is accompanied by four smaller more detailed maps, quite littered with place names, intended to focus in more detail on unknown areas of the Southern land. Here we see a satirical mix of fact and fantasy- while there are more tenuous links to geographical fact in the names of Terra sub polaris & Aphrodysia Nova Gynia, (which is suggestive of the north coast of Australia), it is the incredible flights of fancy that dominate - 'Moronia' the land of the fools ; 'Ivronia; the land of the drunkards; 'Larcinia' for the gluttons, 'Plagianus' a land of the thieves; and 'Viraginia' a land of women, with cities named Amazonia, Erotium vel Amantina, and various other lascivious place names. The dating of the maps is difficult. The book, 'Mundus alter et idem sive Terra Australis', was a popular satirical romance that was printed in three editions between 1605 & 1607, and several later editions post-1640. The maps have page locations engraved within the plate line, Pag. 18, 20, 90, 112 & 192. Maps drypoint in very good condition, flattened trimmed close with very little margins, printed on laid paper, one with a watermark of a daisy above a hand. For the book see Sabin 29819; Davidson, p40-41; STC (rev.) 12685.3.

Autograph letter signed by Edward John Eyre, the renowned Australian explorer of southern Australia & New South Wales, and the first European to explore the coastline of the Great Australian Bight. Drawing upon his experiences overlanding sheep in the 1830's, Eyre (1815 - 1901) applied for the job of laying out an overland route to the west. In June 1840 the expedition started out but failed. Sending back all but Baxter & Wylie, Eyre set out from Fowlers Bay to cross the Great Australian Bight. After much hardship & losing Baxter, Eyre & Wylie ran into and were saved by a French whaler which gave them supplies to continue. This letter was written in the period following Eyre's governor ship of the colony of Jamaica, during which time he had brutally suppressed the Morant Bay Rebellion, using government troops to kill innocent men, women & children. Eyre returned to England (August 1866) where those who called him a murderer founded a committee calling for him to be put on trial; he was charged with murder twice, but the cases were never pursued. The letter was written from 15 Charlotte Street, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, and dated 18th July 1868. Eyre comments on his journey from London to Edinburgh and thanks the recipient for "having my name put down for the Speaker's gallery for Thursday last". It is signed "Yours faithfully, E. Eyre". One can only imagine his journey was considerably easier than the trip from Adelaide to Perth!Folded letter on cream colored note paper with oval embossed stamp at the top, bearing the motto "Si Je Puis". Note measures 3 3/4 x 6 1/8". With one horizontal fold, traces of blue paper adhering to verso, where letter was removed from an album.

"The Departure & Second Class" and "The Return - First Class" are a pair of moralistic narrative works, a popular genre in Victorian times, and demonstrate the growing trend towards emigration, particularly to Australia. The Victorian artist Abraham Solomon depicts a family traveling second class to a port where the young boy will go to sea in "The Departure". In "The Return" the boy returns as a successful middle aged squatter in the first class carriage with his son and daughter. Both paintings by Solomon are held in the National Railway Museum UK . Of "The Departure" they write "The painting is a contemporary image of rail travel showing the discomfort of the lower classes traveling in a draughty bench-seated second class carriage. Despite their discomfort this shows how the railways opened up travel to the less wealthy as well as those with money. It also shows how the industry allowed travel nationally and internationally, with the posters in the background advertising passage to Australia highlighting the growing trend of emigration. Roughly 65,000 years ago the earliest humans arrived in Australia from Timor and eventually created astonishing works of art in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia, making them perhaps the oldest paintings of human figures ever created. Called the Bradshaws after Joseph Bradshaw (who first recorded them in 1891), or the Gwion Gwion, the mystery of their creation has not been solved and has become a politically and culturally charged issue. Grahame Walsh (1944 - 2007), the author and world's leading expert on the Bradshaws, made thousands of photographs of these sophisticated works and was commissioned by the Australian government to produce a book considered to be the finest in its field ('Australia's Greatest Rock Art') for the Bicentenary. A truly handsome copy of this book rarely found complete, the text bound in period full gilt calf binding, the atlas bound in the original french papered boards, housed in a matching solander box. D'Entrecasteaux was a French admiral and governor of Mauritius who "was sent to the Pacific in 1791 to search for "La Perouse". No traces of the lost expedition were found, but in the course of his search, d'Entrecasteaux made important cartographic contributions to the Australian coast. He explored the west and southwest coasts of Australia, the south coast of Tasmania, the west coast of New Caledonia, and visited Tonga and the Santa Cruz Islands" (Hill). D'Entrecasteaux did not complete the voyage, succumbing to colic off the coast of New Guinea. His expedition is highly regarded for its collection of natural history specimens, but the most important contribution was to the accurate mapping of Australia, and in particular charts of South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. On the expedition's return voyage the log book and charts were seized by the British Royal Navy, and only returned to France on the insistence of Sir Joseph Banks. Ferguson 461 (Text) and 443 (atlas); Hill 467; Wantrup 64a-b.3 volumes: 2 volumes text, 4to (11.25 x 8.5"), (4) lvi, 704, 32 folding plates; (4), 692pp, 1 folding plate and atlas volume, folio (23 .5 x 17.75"). Half-titles in text volumes; atlas published by "Au Depot general des cartes et plans de la marine et des colonies", with title and contents leaf and complete with 39 maps. Some maps numbered from between 1-39, while some are numbered as per the French hydrographic office "Depot de la Marine" between 301-314. This was not an uncommon occurence with the French publishers. Complete with 33 engraved folding plates in the text and 39 engraved maps in the atlas, mostly double-page atlas uncut. Provenance Mr. Perrin de Daron with his book plate in the text volumes. This is likely Louis Perrin de Daron (1805 - 1856), a "capitaine de cavalerie" from a very old French family in the town of Paray le Monial. Paray le Monial is located in central France, in Burgundy, roughly due west of Geneva, noted for its basilica. A handsome set.

He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time. These four images are mounted on a page from an album, with handwritten captions in black ink. The first photograph, "Sydney Harbor, NSW" is a view looking over rooftops toward the harbor and tall masted ships moored and docked; and "Sydney Observatory", looking up toward the building from a lower vantage point; both with handwritten labels laid down and with the C. On the verso are "Botanical Gardens, Sydney" which shows an entrance gate with an open doorway and view into the garden at the right, and "Nepean River, NSW", with a view across the river to cliffs on the far side, are blind stamped at the lower right "C. The text below the illustration reads, "Three years ago, a Mr. Smith, a gentleman engaged in iron-works in Australia, called at the Government House, Sydney, with a large lump of gold, offering, for a considerable sum of money, to point out where he obtained it, and where more was to be obtained in abundance. He was advised, however, to disclose all, and leave the reward to the generosity of the Government. This he declined to do, and so the affair ended. In April, 1851, Mr. Hargreaves, who had recently returned from California, addressed the government, offering, for a stipulated sum, to reveal the gold fields. The same answer was returned to him as Mr. Smith had received. Mr. H., however, did communicate his discoveries; and after the government inspector had proved the accuracy of his statement, and reported that gold was everywhere plentiful, Mr. Hargreaves was rewarded with £500, and an appointment of £350 per annum, with an allowance for two horses, to continue his explorations." 6 1/2 x 8 7/8". Advertising pamphlet for Isaac Van Amburgh's Menagerie. With a preface "To the Public" in which the plea is made for the support of the newly formed zoological "Institute" in the United States. This is followed by "A Brief Biographical Sketch of I. A. Van Amburgh". Van Amburgh (1811&1865) , who was born in Fishkill, New York, was the first to introduce a trained wild animal act into shows & was known as "The Lion King" and "Van Amburgh the Brute Tamer". He became the star attraction of the traveling menagerie world by entering the cages of the big cats, subduing them, and sometimes thrusting his head into their mouths: "It was in the Zoological Institute, nearly opposite the old Bowery Theatre, where Mr. Van Amburgh first appeared before the public, surrounded by a groupe (sic) of Lions, Tigers, Leopards and Panthers. ... The success of the enterprise, if such the act might be called, at once secured for him who had accomplished it, the applause and admiration of the world. His star of popularity rose immediately; crowds rushed to see him, and Van Amburgh's fame spread through civilization... ". The sketch concludes with an account of Queen Victoria's highly enthusiastic reaction to Van Amburgh's performance in London in 1839; the young queen was apparently so impressed that she went six times to see the show at Drury Lane. Victoria commissioned Edwin Landseer, her favorite artist and the most popular animal painter of the time to make a painting of Van Amburgh reclining in the cage with the wild animals surrounding him (the painting, at the Yale Center for British Art, is titled 'Portrait of Mr. Van Amburgh, as He Appeared with His Animals at the London Theatres').The biographical sketch of Van Amburgh is followed by "Description of the Animals in this Exhibition -- Elephants." Very scarce lithograph map with modern hand color of New South Wales settlements, showing the area at the very end of the governor ship of the notorious William Bligh (of the mutiny on the Bounty), which had ended with the Rum Rebellion. The plan shows how the settlements appeared before Macquarie's ambitious program of public works, which included the naming of the 5 Macquarie towns (Richmond, Castlereagh, Pitt Town, Wilberforce and Windsor). In the upper left corner there is a rudimentary outline of the Blue Mountains; this was before the time of the first European crossing of the mountains which opened access to the fertile land beyond, by Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth in 1813. The map is similar in nature to the map of New South Wales in Collin's 'An account of the English colony in New South Wales", but is larger and more detailed (the Collins map measures 9 1/2 x 7 1/2"). Includes table: "Reference to Districts" at the right side, which lists Sydney as item "I"; "13,700 Acres Orphan Ground" is designated just north of Parramatta; many plots designated "Common Grant" or "Common Lease". Below the bottom margin: "London: Published by John Booth, Duke Street, Portland Place, July 20th 1810." 13 x 9 1/2"; paper size 15 x 11 1/2" . Two closed tears right edge of map. Lecture 3, "Duties and Functions of Department of Native Welfare". The third lecture includes a section 5.2 titled "Child Welfare" which states: "From that time forward (1951) the provisions of the Child Welfare Act have been applied and a properly constituted Children's Court must be satisfied on evidence produced that a native child is neglected in the terms of the Child Welfare Act before its separation from its family can be compulsorily undertaken." (p14). McLarty, the author of these lectures, was present during the 1957 highly controversial filming by William Grayden of the living conditions of aboriginal people at Warburton which later became known as the 'Warburton Range controversy'. Grayden went on to make the film titled 'Their Darkest Hour', shocking in its portrayal of living conditions, but also controversial as to its accuracy.

Wonderful graphic, with large portrait of Amy, her aircraft in the background; photo by Vaughan Freeman; illustration by Laurence Wright. Price '6D" at lower right corner. Sheet music of music "specially composed for the homecoming of the heroine of the England-Australia flight 1930, Miss Amy Johnson," entitled simply "Amy." The words are by Joseph George Gilbert and the music by Horatio Nicholls, with arrangement for banjo and ukulele by Alvin Keech. It begins, "There's a little lady who has captured every heart, Amy Johnson, it's you!" and then only gets better. No. 2021. Amy Johnson (1903-1941), while flying solo or with her husband, Jim Mollison (who had proposed to her only eight hours after they met), set a number of distance records during the 1930s. The song commemorates the flight that brought her worldwide fame, when she flew solo from England to Australia in her "Jason" Gipsy Moth. She left Croydon, south of London, on May 5 and arrived in Darwin, Northern Territory on May 24 after flying 11,000 miles. Jason, shown on the cover of this sheet music, is now at the Science Museum of London. Johnson drowned in the Thames Estuary in January 1941 after bailing out of her plane while serving with the Air Transport Auxiliary. Approx. 9 1/2 x 12". Copper engraved caricature in full original hand-color. London 1829. 25 x 34.5 cm. Caricature of Thomas Peel, one of the original land grantees in Western Australia. The cartoon depicts Thomas plucking a swan on the banks of the Swan River with kangaroos on the far shore. Thomas is exclaiming "Cousin Bob's letter did the job I shall feather my nest however." "Cousin Bob" refers to Sir Robert Peel, who helped to establish the Swan River Colony, now the site of Perth, Western Australia. To the left of Thomas is a sign post "The best parts of the Swan River Settlement only to be got at through the hands of Mr. Thos P--l!!". The original color is vibrant, the paper pristine, with just the faintest of offsetting visible in the upper and lower margin of a facing plate in the album in which it was once mounted. This has never seen the light of day. The provenance of the print is unique. It is from the collection of Louis-Philippe, Duc d'Orleans, late King of France. The king was an avid collector of caricatures in his day, despite his tempestuous relationship with the satirists of France. Louis-Philippe's full collection came up at auction in Paris December 2003.
