Cloth. xii + 238pp (last blank), 2 folding maps (1 North America, 1 Australasia). An extremely important study. In the historical introduction to later editions of "The Origin of Species," Darwin quotes Matthew as a forerunner of the theory of evolution. "In Emigration Fields ... Matthew seems constantly to imply, though he does not state, the ideas of adaptation to environment, struggle for existence, natural selection of the fittest, and modification of species." Matthews encourages the starving hordes of Ireland to migrate to Texas as Mexico is Catholic in the main; the amalgamation would take place readily. Provenance: T.M. Ramsay.

Printed for Joseph Bumstead, Boston 1801, 1st American edition of La Perouse's voyage, also recounting the earliest Spanish voyages to Alaska, and Vancouver's explorations of the Northwest Pacific. Sml. 8vo, (vi), 333 pp, (1), some mild foxing. Attractive modern full calf in contemporary style. Howes L93: "First visit of a foreigner to missionary establishments in Upper California." Sabin 38966: "The narrative of the enterprising Perouse...relating the peculiarities he observed in the natives of the northwest coast of North America, are especially valuable." Hill, p. 471: "This anonymous account of the voyages of La Perouse, Maurelle and Vancouver was compiled from the official accounts of Milet-Mureau and Vancouver. Apparently this is not an American compilation, the present edition being a reprint of an earlier Scottish edition printed in Edinburgh in 1798." La Perouse was the first foreign visitor to visit California, after its founding in 1769, leaving the best account and description of the country until well into the 19th century. Comparison of the treatment of the Indians by the missionaries with the slave system in the West Indies caused a bitter debate for many years to come. Maurelle (or Mourelle) was pilot of the expedition under Heceta and Quadra, which followed that under Perez, of 1774. These were the earliest Spanish voyages to Alaska, Maurelle's Journal is the only contemporary account in English of that Spanish sea voyage.

Shelvocke, George. A Voyage Round the World by Way of the Great South Sea: Performed in a Private Expedition during the War, which Broke Out with Spain, in the Year 1718. London 1757. (12), 476pp, plus folding map and four engraved plates (two folding). Contemporary calf, rebacked in period style, spine gilt, leather label. Extremes rubbed, some scuffing, corners worn. Just about a very good copy. In a green cloth case. The second edition, after the first of 1726. Shelvocke was engaged in a privateering expedition against Spanish shipping on the Pacific coast of America. He sailed as far north as Baja California, and two of the plates depict men and women of that peninsula. He also reported gold in the region. A storm had separated Shelvocke's ship from the accompanying vessel on the expedition, and Shelvocke did not wait for the captain of that ship at the agreed locations in the Canaries and Juan Fernandez. Instead he sailed for Brazil and then to the west coast of South America, including stops at Payta, Peru and Lower California. He returned home via Guam and Macao. Upon his return to England, Shelvocke was accused of piracy and taken prisoner. Betagh, in the preface to his book on the same expedition, describes Shelvocke's book as "entirely a deception, and his whole conduct a disgrace to his country." The double-sheet folding map depicts the world in two hemispheres, with the route of the voyage traced and with California depicted as an island. "The whole history of this expedition is a curious commentary upon the morals of the times. The English had passed out of the freebooting stage, strictly speaking, and were now eager to cover their privateering exploits with a little more clothing than in the preceding century" - Wagner. An important English Pacific voyage. Hill, p. 272; Howes S383; Cowan, pp 581-82; Wagner Spanish Southwest 88; Borba de Moraes p 796; Sabin 80159.

"Drake's voyage of 1577-80 had two purposes - to discover trading bases in the legendary "Terra Australis" and the Moluccas and to raid the west coast of South America. Sailing up the coasts of Chile, Peru, and Mexico, Drake sacked towns and plundered shipping. He reached California, which he named New Albion and claimed for England in the name of Queen Elizabeth. Returning to England, via the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Drake was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world." Hill p. 86.
