The first volume contains the life of Dante and ''Hell'', the second a chronological view of the age of Dante and ''Purgatory'', and the third volume ''Paradise" and Index.  8vo, 3 volumes, 303pp, 309pp & 297pp, marbled end papers and all edges marbled, a beautiful clean copy.  Handsomely bound in period full gilt stamped morocco with gilt titles and outer dentelles, raised black and gilt spine bands and red leather spine labels ("Carey's Dante"), gilt inner dentelles.  Volume I with a small pencil owner signature at the ffep, Will H. Jacobs, Madison Wisconsin (born in 1831 in Perry County, Kentucky) and dated June 5th 1881.  OCLC: 16630967.
