Copper engraved hand colored map of the American eastern coast, with an inset view of New York City, here "Neu Jorck sive Neu Amsterdam". This is the important fourth state showing the city of Boston for the first time. Here it is spelled "Briston"; later states will correct the spelling. The map has the Lotter imprint; Lotter continued the map making business following the death of Matthias Seutter, his father in law. The cartouche has a scene of natives and gods presenting gifts to a seated monarch. The view of New York, one of the earliest, shows the city with the southern end of Manhattan at the extreme right, and a small fence which will eventually become the wall of Wall Street. The Delaware river is shown correctly as separate from the Hudson River, and the boundaries of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now shown with printed lines, rather than the previous practice, which was to leave the boundaries up to the map colorist. With native American tribes & villages, many animals, wild and domesticated. 23 x 20". Good impression, vivid original color. Tooley, The Mapping of America, p292, #26a

A striking hand colored engraved dissected map (paper on linen), for an early educational game published on December 24, 1794. The Directions are printed at the top of the left column of text, with Rules directly below. The rules stipulate that each player must have a marker (in the shape of a pyramid or "traveller") and 4 counters. A "Totum" or spinner is also needed to see who gets to play first. There are 117 playing spaces each designating a place, beginning with Rochester and ending with London. Each of the numbered places and their descriptions are listed to the left and right of the playing surface, with any rewards or penalties for landing on a particular town. The place with the worst penalty for the player is number 89, Isle of Man, as "The "traveller" will be shipwrecked on this island, and thereby lose his chance of the game". The descriptions of each town highlight historical facts, commerce, trade and manufacturing. A few tide marks bottom panels, otherwise very good. 25 1/2 x 19 3/4".

A very large, important early copper engraved map of the western United States made during the period of westward expansion propelled by Manifest Destiny, with original outline hand coloring. The map is untitled, but the words "Western Territory" in all caps extends through the central section. The map covers all the country from western Missouri to the Rocky Mountains, and from Santa Fe ("Touse" being Taos) north to the Black Hills (3 degrees too far south). By Lieut. (Enoch) Steen, United States Dragoons. From Lt. J. P. Kingsbury's 'Journal of the Expedition of Dragoons, Under the Command of Colonel Henry P. Dodge, to the Rocky Mountains, During the Summer of 1835'. Colonel Henry P. Dodge commanded the Dragoon Expedition during the summer of 1835 to patrol the Indian frontier from the upper waters of the Red River to the Rocky Mountains. He was appointed to this post by President Andrew Jackson in recognition of his achievement in keeping the warring Native American tribes in check. The 1830s was a period in which Americans began to travel westward in huge numbers, propelled by the principle of Manifest Destiny. "The expedition left Fort Leavenworth on May 29, 1835, proceeding up the South Platte River to the Rocky Mountains, of present day Omaha) , thence to Fountain Creek and Bent's Fort; they returned down the Arkansas River to the Santa Fe Trail and back to Fort Leavenworth, arriving there on September 16. The detachment visited the Omaha, Pawnee, Arikara, and other tribes along the upper Platte and Arkansas Rivers during a march of sixteen hundred miles" (Plains & Rockies IV:63). Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 418 & 421 & pp. 149-51; Howes K161;35 x 19 1/2". Very good copy of "an extremely important western map", Dick Fitch 1992.

The first printed map specifically devoted to the Pacific Ocean. Ortelius's atlas, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" was "the first true atlas in the modern sense of the term, being a set of uniformly produced and methodically organized maps of all parts of the world based strictly on current knowledge...first published in 1570, it was commercially successful and continued to be updated and enlarged through its final editions of 1612... Most of the atlas' significant maps were not present in its original form, however, but were added during the course of its forty-two year evolution, demonstrating that Ortelius also possessed the courage and initiative to use fresh data to chart regions which were still poorly understood. A prime example of this is his map of the Pacific, which was engraved in 1589 and first included in the atlas in 1590. This is the first printed map specifically devoted to the Pacific Ocean." Suarez, "Shedding the Veil", p. 110-111. Ortelius radically revised the northwest coast of America, the California peninsula and the contour of the west coast of South America. He differentiates between "North" and "South" America. The name "Califormia" (sic) appears, though designating only the peninsular region. New Guinea is now boldly depicted as an island, and the large islands off its' coast are the Solomons. The Antarctic land mass has not yet been discovered, but is theorized. The map shows a large land mass rising from the bottom edge, entitled "Terra Australis, Sive Magellanica, Non-dum Detecta." At the extreme right corner, opposite the tip of S. America is "Tierra del Fuego", listing the names of C. di S. Thomas, C. de Camaron, C. del bon defseo, C. Defseado on its coast. Copper plate engraving with early hand color, 34.5 x 49.5 cms. Beautifully restored. Overall a very nice copy of a highly important of the first chart of the Pacific Ocean. Burden, The Mapping of North America, 74.

Knowledge of this area was of great importance to the Dutch West India Company, for whom Gerritsz was official map maker, as the company challenged the Spanish and Portuguese monopoly on trade routes to East and the profitable spice trade. Gerritsz used the latest information on the area, based on the recent discoveries of Isaac Le Maire and Willem Schouten, Dutch explorers who passed the Straits of Magellan in 1615 searching for a shorter passage to the Pacific, and discovered the "Straet le Maire". One of the first studies in comparative cartography, here are two maps of the west coast of the United States from the Strait of Anian (modern day Alaska) to the tip of Baja California, one inset on the other, and with intriguingly different interpretations of the same area. These are extracts based on maps by Vischer of 1612 and 1641, and appeared in the Supplement to Denis Diderot's Encyclopedie. Both maps showing the fictitious Strait of Anian at the top; it was part of the legendary Northwest Passage, the long hoped for link of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, whose existence many explorers attempted to prove, and which James Cook challenged in his third voyage of 1778. The smaller inset map shows much more of the Strait, along with an open sea, making a suggestion of a Northwest Passage. The coastlines vary in both maps, with the smaller one listing important place names such as C. de San Francisco and los Farilones; while the larger shows the Bay of San Miguel (current day San Diego). The larger map showing a section of coast where the Sierra Nevada are drawn called "Nova Albion", which was explored and claimed for England by Sir Francis Drake; the smaller map showing the entire west coast area as "Mexicana". <![CDATA[
The five maps from Hall's imaginary voyage to Terra Australis Incognita, the EARLIEST FICTITIOUS VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA. Hall frames his voyage by relating the feats of Columbus, Drake & Magellan, and references their discoveries (the Straits of Magellan are clearly marked) to introduce his moral allegory describing a voyage to the great southern unknown continent. Sometimes seen as a prototype for Swifts "Gulliver's Travels", it is the story of Marcus Brittanicus and his 30-year stay in Terra Australis Incognita, a land consisting of four areas - one inhabited by gluttons, another by fools, a third by thieves and the fourth, Shee-landt, by women. Hall was a Cambridge-educated priest with a liking for verse and 'pungent' satire, who at an early stage in his career incurred the wrath of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who in 1599 ordered the burning of his satires on the ground of licentiousness. The text refers to 'Shee-landt' and the island of "Double-sex Ile", whose hermaphrodite inhabitants dress in a combination of men's and women's cloth and bear such names as Mary-philip or Peter-alice. It is clear why the Archbishop of Canterbury would be incensed. The maps are unsigned, but believed by Hind to be the work of Kip, and are most interesting. There is a 'general chart' bearing a resemblance to Ortleius's "Maris Pacifici", the first map of the Pacific Ocean, with a large unknown land occupying the bottom half of the map, while the top half has reasonable representations of the continents of North & South America (Virginia; C. de la Florida; California; Rio Grande; Patagones; C. de la Victoria; Peru; Brasilia; Saribano) Africa (Promontor Bone Spei; Monomotapa; Auzica; Abassia) , Asia (Malacca; Sian; Narfinga; Smagar; Maliupar; C. Comori) and parts of Europe. It is accompanied by four smaller more detailed maps, quite littered with place names, intended to focus in more detail on unknown areas of the Southern land. Here we see a satirical mix of fact and fantasy- while there are more tenuous links to geographical fact in the names of Terra sub polaris & Aphrodysia Nova Gynia, (which is suggestive of the north coast of Australia), it is the incredible flights of fancy that dominate - 'Moronia' the land of the fools ; 'Ivronia; the land of the drunkards; 'Larcinia' for the gluttons, 'Plagianus' a land of the thieves; and 'Viraginia' a land of women, with cities named Amazonia, Erotium vel Amantina, and various other lascivious place names. The dating of the maps is difficult. The book, 'Mundus alter et idem sive Terra Australis', was a popular satirical romance that was printed in three editions between 1605 & 1607, and several later editions post-1640. The maps have page locations engraved within the plate line, Pag. 18, 20, 90, 112 & 192. Maps drypoint in very good condition, flattened trimmed close with very little margins, printed on laid paper, one with a watermark of a daisy above a hand. For the book see Sabin 29819; Davidson, p40-41; STC (rev.) 12685.3.

Extremely rare and early map of the Southern Hemisphere that attempts to define the assumed Great South land mass, including today's Australia, Antarctica, Indonesia, South Africa & Argentina. The top of the map has an interesting Mercator projection of Patagonia achingly close to a large land mass "Terrae Australis Pars". C. Della Victoria and the illustration of Magellan's ship the Victoria bears witness to his discovery of the strait that now bears his name. Below is a polar projection of a great south land entitled "Terra Australis". Within the Antarctic Circle, termed "Terra Incognitia" is an array of mountains and 3 large named rivers. Part of the coast (actually the north coast of Australia) is marked with Marco Polo's kingdoms of Beach, Lucach and Maletur. This is a German re-engraving of the Wytfliet Map dated 1597 (Spence 3010), but is much rare than it (see discussion below). German text on the verso with the header "Chica" above one page. The Quad map of a year later (Spence 3011) included the addition of "Fretum Magellanicum" at the Straights. (see Tooley plt 102). Oddly, the Metellus is not in Spence, but should be between 3010 and 3011. See Schilder fig. 6 for the Wyfliet map. Copper engraving, 22 x 28.5 cms."Wytfliet and Metellus produced the first separate printed maps of the Southern Hemisphere. Both are foundation maps of America and Australia. The Wytfliet is known to have been produced in 1597, the Metellus, which is much rarer and seldom available on the market, is usually dated 1598 but some scholars have argued the possibility that it may precede the Wytfliet. The Metellus is acknowledged as, by far, the finer engraving of the two, which, along with its rarity and importance, makes it a focal point of any collection of early American and Australian maps." (After Casten). "As with the Cornelis Wytfliet a year earlier this publication contained a set of maps relating to the Americas only. All but one are derived from the Wytfliet. These were used to illustrate the German edition of José de Acosta's 'De Natura Nova Orbis', first published in Salamanca, 1588. Acosta was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, historian and cosmographer. The maps, however, are attributed to Johannes Matalius Metellus (Jean Matal in his native French), a very well respected geographer of his day. In the 'America sive Novus Orbis' of 1600, he is named as the cartographer of the maps but, most probably, did not see their completion as he died in 1597. The work was finished by a friend, Meurer identifies him as Conrad Loew, a pseudonym for Matthias Quad. Born in Burgundy, 1520, Metellus spent much of his working life in Louvain where, of course, the Wytfliet atlas was published. However, he spent his last years in Cologne, dying in 1597. This leads us to the possibility thet the Metellus actually pre-dates the Wytfliet as the first atlas concentrating on America. A number of questions are posed. Is there an earlier edition still unknown, as all issues are extremely rare ? Is Metellus the true author of the Wytfliet maps? All issues have text on the back, and are extremely rare." (Burden on the Conibas map) Only a handful examples of the Metellus books are known, see Burden 115 for a list of locations.

Map published London 10th June 1775, printed in 2 sheets and joined to span the Southern Pacific ocean from west of New Zealand to east of South America. The vast masses of sea on the map are criss-crossed with the routes of explorers including Cook (1st voyage), Byron, Wallis, Bougainville, Anson, Halley & Narborough. Islands include Pitcairn Island, at the incorrect longitude of 133 degrees W; the "Imaginary Isles of Solomon" (Solomons); Otahiete (Tahiti); Marquesa of Mendoca (Marquesas) & Tierra del Spiritu Santu (New Hebrides). A very uncommon chart, with strong New Zealand and Antarctic credentials. Cook's discovery & circumnavigation of New Zealand is recorded, with his errors, only 2 years after the publication of Cook's own account. Freziers' ice islands are recorded, as are the close approaches of the Antarctic Circle by Cook & Anson. Tooley page 140 no. 1119. "Sayer was one of the leading publishers of geographical material in 18th century London. In 1775, he went into partnership with John Bennett and together issued a series of atlases and charts of most parts of the world." The northern border is the Amazon river, and in the south, Freziers' ice islands and the 60th degree latitude. Copper engraved map with original outline hand color, laid & watermarked paper, beautiful copper engravings of ships on the explorer's routes. Excellent condition with a few small chips in the margins, 111 X 45.5 cms (43 3/4 x 18").

The small folio atlas of maps to accompany Peron's work, with an original paper dust wrapper over the original blue publishers' board, and an 1817 Belgian lending library subscription list in the front. Includes the important general chart of Australia, "The first detailed map of the (complete Australian) coastline." (Clancy, Mapping of Terra Australia). Part of Ferguson 449; Tooley, 610-623, and p.83 for note; Hill pp 229-30; Wantrup pp 153-159 for lengthy discussion of the expedition. First edition. Louis Claude de Freycinet conducted these surveys with his brother Henri-Louis & others under the command of Nicholas Baudin in 1802. Peron's narrative appeared in 1807; Freycinet's accompanying atlases four years later. The expedition was commanded by Nicholas Baudin, on a voyage of discovery on behalf of Napoleon. Although Flinders had discovered and given English names to many of the places subsequently named by the French, he was detained by the French in Mauritius, and his work appeared after this one. The maps of Australia are outstanding. The maps are: 1: Nouvelle Hollande, folding; 2: Terra Napoleon, (South Australia) folding; 3: Terre de Diemen (Tasmania); 4: S. Iles de Furneaux, etc. 5: Hunter, Maria, King Island off Tasmania, the Bonaparte archipelago off the northwest coast of W.A.; 6: Terre Napoleon & Iles Josephine (South Australia) etc.; 7: Golfes Bonaparte and Josephine. etc. (South Australia) 8: Ile Decres & d'Institut, (South & West Australia), etc.; 9: Iles Jerome, Berthier, & Comte de Cumberland, (South Australia, NSW) etc.; 10: Geographe Bay & Albany (West Australia) 11: Baie Laplace, Port Western, (SA, WA, Vic); 12: Iles L. Sml. folio atlas, 35 cm, engraved title, 3 pp contents, 14 maps (2 folding). Original paper dust wrapper over the original blue publishers boards, with fabric ties. Large folding chart with two closed tears repaired otherwise an extremely clean, fine, uncut copy with the original tissue guards. With an interesting record of an early (1817) Belgian lending library pasted onto the front free end paper, dated 1817, with a list of borrowers, each of whom signed for the copy.

A very good copy of this famous atlas, with stunningly bright, hand-colored maps of all the individual States and Territories, also including the early edition of the map of 'Oregon and Upper California', bound between maps numbered 35 and 36. Visible signs of damp staining in the margins but do not affect the vivid colors in the maps. The Atlas concentrates mainly on the American continent with 43 of the maps including a fine double-page full map of the United States. S. Augustus Mitchell started cartographic work 1830 on "A New American Atlas" , and eventually took over the Tanner Atlas. In 1846 he published his first edition of the present work. Mitchell continued to publish the Atlas (with updates and corrections) until 1850, when he sold the copyright to Cowperthwait & Co. also of Philadelphia. Folio. (17 3/16 x 13 7/8 inches). Lithographic title with large vignette, letterpress 'table of contents', hand-colored frontispiece (map), in total 73 hand-colored lithographed maps, charts and city plans. Modern red half morocco, gilt title, two large red morocco title labels on front and back cover. Phillips Atlases 6104; Rumsey p.275.
