A fascinating look at 19th century life in New York, in an album created by Adam William Spies (1800 - 1891), who established a highly successful hardware and sword & firearms business. The album spans almost the entire 19th century, beginning with Spies' birth in 1800, and continuing to 1888, when he records the death of his wife, Sarah Ann Morrison. In the 1840s, Spies started dealing in real estate, the majority in New York City and the Boroughs, but also in Indiana, Wisconsin, Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri & Arkansas. These purchases are accompanied with hand drawn and colored lot maps. The documents pasted in the album date from 1820 to 1891.Spies' grandfather was Adam Bergh, whose family settled in Rhinebeck, NY around 1770; his other grandfather was John Spies who came to New York from Germany around 1750. Spies' father was born in New York "about 1767, and during the Revolution ran away from home & became a drummer boy in the Rebel Army".Spies built a highly successful arms business, producing some of the finest officers' swords and guns of the Civil War. (One page includes an engraved business card of Samuel Colt requesting assistance, and is signed by Samuel Colt). The album is both an extensive record of Spies' land purchases, a guide for his grandchildren & a family genealogy. Spies writes that he wishes his own father had provided him with written guidance. Below his name, printed in a large type face, Spies has written "Valuable Forms for Contracts_ and Hints preserved in this book".Many written passages involve his recollections of his early life in New York.In a page titled "To my grandchildren.... New York, December 26, 1873, he writes: "I was born in the second ward of New York, near the Park, on 4th September 1800, my grandfather Adam Bergh, then residing in Chamber St. ... probably there were not ten men in New York worth $100,000....1805: The Battery was a narrow strip of greensward, in front of which at low tide was a rocky beach where the boys caught crab...the aristocracy were then located in Broadway - Beaver St and Greenwich St., below Trinity Church....1813 & 1814: During the War earth works (batteries) were erected by the citizens extending from Fort Green southerly to Gowanus Creek. Day after day all the lawyers (or others) would assemble in the NY Park and ... would march to Fort Green and do the work of common laborers.. along the line which extended about 3 miles, intended to keep out John Bull.In 1815 I was placed for a month on trial with David and John Albert Wolfe in Maiden Lane in the fine fancy hardware business .. I stayed with them until 1823 when I was sent by them to Europe as agent to purchase fancy hardware & military goods. In 1820 I was a Fireman (an unpaid Fireman) as most able active respectable young men were...My service as volunteer Fireman for 10 years exempted me from all military and jury duty forever.1820 There were very many wooden houses, very rarely more than 2 stories ... having fine open yards with peach trees on every block, we had no Croton water, no gas, no omnibusses (sic), wood was the only fuel ... no ocean steamers, no telegraph, no Erie Canal. 1834 found me doing business in my own name at 192 Pearl Street.1835 After the Great Fire Pearl St. from Broad to Fulton St. was the great mercantile mart of the western world, but growing so rapidly they had to spread to Courtlandt St and Fulton, Park Place and north again..."The album also contains extensive records of Spies' land purchases, which began in Manhattan, but then extended out across the US. The records of these land purchases are accompanied with hand drawn and colored lot maps. His index records the following properties: Indianna (sic); Manitowoc, Wisconsin (Hazel Green, Pine Lands); Alabama; Illinois (Dalton, Mercer); Michigan; Tennessee; New Jersey (Bellville); Pennsylvania; Iowa (Calhoun and Plymouth Co.); Missouri; Arkansas; New York City: Howard St., Vesey St., 14th St., Fulton St., Platt St., 48th St. near 3rd Ave., 55th & 56th St., 6th Avenue, 98th St.,105th & 106th St., , Madison Ave.; Brooklyn: Williamsburgh, four locations & Delaplaine; Staten Island; Yonkers, Woodlawn, Fair Haven, Port Jervis, Belmont, Bushwick, and Maspeth. Most of the property pages relate to Spies' New York properties; he also includes two and a half pages of advice on construction in New York and selling real estate, including the quality of building materials, working with an architect and builder, security deposits, plumbing, glazing and painting.Quite a few of the New York City property maps show great detail at each block, with owners' names and detailed lot descriptions; date purchased & price; date sold & price; tenants he liked (German) and disliked (Irish). There is also a very nicely hand drawn and colored map of Spies' property southwest of Calumet Lake in very early Chicago. The map extends from the Calumet River up to what is marked as Chicago, with just a few structures indicated in red, and with the Illinois Canal, the University, Hyde Park and the major railroad lines (p 35).There are also printed documents pertaining to Spies' other activities, including his work as a volunteer fireman (Engine Company No. 5 of the Fire Department), the ASPCA, the Stuyvesant Fire Insurance Company and the Society for the Improvement of the Condition of the Poor. The Society, by the early 1850s, was the most influential charity in New York.Spies has included a certificate of his membership in the ASPCA in its very first year, dated 1866; the society, the oldest animal welfare organization in the US, was founded by Spies' relative, Henry Bergh, on April 10, 1866. The certificate, with the red stamped seal, is dated June 11, 1866. Various other ephemera is tipped into the album, including land auction flyers, and a broadside advertising "Meeting of the War Democracy, in Favor of General Grant for President! Cooper Institute, Wednesday, October 21st, 1868." Below the title is a long list of Vice Presidents, which includes A. W. Spies' name. Spies has marked with a small check mark all those who were "known by me", which includes names such as Havermeyer, Pierrepont, Astor, and Vanderbilt. The last item in the album is a neat pencil and watercolor drawing of Spies' father's home on a New York street, signed A. W. Spies, 1808 in the lower left corner, and showing three buildings, including a 2 story wood building with a sign over the door, 'Jhn Spies'. To the right is a barn labeled 'Goodyear'. A handwritten note on the verso reads "The Residence of John Spies, year 1808, New York. Having served as a soldier in the Revolution & having received an honorable discharge and a Land warrant which he sold, but which was located somewhere near Cayuga Lake by the purchaser".Folio, tooled leather covers. spine lacking, disbound. 188 hand numbered folio pages, but confusingly numbered and somewhat out of order, with additional smaller pages & newspaper articles tipped in.A fascinating portrait of early New York and the real estate business throughout the 1800s.

A bold early broadside advertising 'the splendid steamboat "COLUMBUS"' Captain H. Tuthill, with woodcut illustration of the steamboat under full steam, flags flying. The steamboat Columbus operated from the foot of Chambers Street, departing every morning except Fridays and returning from Peekskill the same day at 1pm, "landing at the Old State Prison Wharf, foot of Amos-street, each way". This stop, at Amos Street (now 10th Street), was the site of Newgate State Prison, New York's first prison, opened in 1797 and closed in 1829 when the inmates were sent up to Sing Sing. Captain Tuthill was an exemplary early steamboat captain, who began his career on the Hudson River in the early 1820s; the first steamboat on the Hudson was the North River Steamboat which left Paulus Hook Ferry on September 4, 1807, heading for Albany. There is an excellent description of Tuthill written in 1835, when he was captain of the "Union" on the identical run from Peekskill to New York. The description of Tuthill appears in Freeman Hunt's 'Letters About the Hudson and its Vicinity' (New York: 1835): "... I cannot forbear the present opportunity of alluding to the fine little steamer Union, which plies between New York and this village daily, landing passengers at Greenburgh, Yonkers, Tarrytown, Sing Sing, Grassy Point, and Caldwell's. Capt. Tuthill, of the Union, is an affable, courteous officer. He unites these qualities with great experience, having been connected with the Hudson River steamboats for more than twelve years. A few days since, a party of gentlemen presented him with a splendid silver pitcher, as a token of their respect for his private worth, and excellent conduct as a steam navigator. ...."The Columbus had a succession of captains in the early 1840s. An advertisement in the Highland Democrat (Peekskill) dated June 2, 1842, names a Captain F. W. Stone on the steamboat Columbus: "The fast sailing steamboat C O L U M B U S, Capt. F . W . S T O N E ." In 1847 the next captain of the vessel is a Capt. J. S. Odell ("Old Steamboat Days on the Hudson River", David Lear Buckman, New York: 1907). 11 x 14" on 13 1/4 x 16 3/4" sheet.

John Peter DeWint (1787 - 1870), was an important early figure in the development of the city of Fishkill Landing, now known as Beacon, New York, who was born in the DeWint (sometimes spelled De Windt) house in Tappan which served as the headquarters of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. DeWint owned 2,000 acres (including the Cedar Grove estate) as well as businesses in Newburgh, New York; he built the Long Dock, owned a shipyard and freight business, and was co-owner, with Cornelius Carman of the first steam-powered ferry operating between Fishkill Landing and Newburgh. His wife was the granddaughter of President John Adams, and Adams family members were frequent visitors to the Cedar Grove Estate, including Thomas Boylston Adams Jr., who was John Quiincy Adams' nephew and a student at West Point. DeWint built the sloop 'Caroline', named in honor of his daughter, which made a record run from New York City to Fishkill Landing in only five hours. In 1838 this daughter Caroline (1815 - 1895) married Andrew Jackson Downing, the highly talented and influential horticulturist and the first great American landscape architect from Newburgh, New York. Downing lost his life saving other passengers on Hudson River steamer "Henry Clay, when in caught fire in 1852.All but the first two pages of this account book are blank. The first entry is dated May 31, 1847 and the final entry is dated January 24, 1848; the total balance listed is $4,981.41. Signed John P. De Wint at the front cover, and with the name of the bank hand lettered in heavy block lettering. Tan leather covered boards, circular wax mark at back cover.

Ledger of some 200 pages with a substantial and detailed record of work performed by free blacks in Dutchess County, New York decades before the Civil War. The ledger begins in 1801 by John Heaton (1776-1827) of Throgs Neck, New York and contains the name, on the first inside page, of his son Samuel Cooper Heaton (born 1811), who apparently took over the ledger and the management of a farm, after his father's death. The Amenia section of the ledger begins in 1810. The first page also includes the name I. Heaton, which may have been John's brother Isaac Heaton. The name Jonah Heaton also appears in the ledger, which is the name of another of John's brothers. The Heatons hired quite a few individuals to work on the farm in Dutchess County who are clearly identified as African Americans. The most frequently hired individual is identified as "Black Philip or Philip Freeman" (Philip is sometimes spelled with two "l"s, and Freeman is also spelled Freman) who also lived at the farm. An entry (page 30) beginning with the date October 23 1841 and carrying through to March 12, 1842 lists the days Phillip worked and his wages at the right column. At the top of the page his rate is $1 per day in October and November; at the middle of the page (December 30), his wage changes to $3 per month: "Philip began to work again for me at $3 per month untill the first of April". There is an interesting note indicating the degree of trust in this relationship: "Philip says he came in my house the middle of Feb 1840 and was to pay $1 Dollar per month for the time he stays in A. I have charged to him page (73) 8 months of it which would make it settled to the middle of October 1841." Other names of free blacks include "Henry Couloured (sic) Man", "Black Jane Ann (4/per week); "Coloured Man John H. Colden" (there is a single page receipt loosely inserted for a payment on June 3, 1842 for "1 pair fine boots 22/ - box blacking/ 02.88"); and "Martin a Couloured Man".Dutchess County had a struggling population of employed free blacks prior to the Civil War, with one of the most well known being James Brown (not in the ledger), who started working in 1829 as a laborer, coachman and gardener at Mt. Gulian, the historic Fishkill home of the Verplanck family. Brown was an escaped slave born Anthony Fisher in Fredericktown, Maryland in 1793, who escaped to New York City, received assistance from the Verplanck family, became emancipated and returned to the south to purchase the freedom of his wife. Brown kept private journals describing his life in Fishkill spanning the period 1829 to 1866 which are now at the New York Historical Society. There are many entries from 1840-1843, including those dated at Amenia and Washington, New York, both in Dutchess County. Names that appear repeatedly during this period include Barbary Van Wyck, Martha Dorlan, Levi Miller, Eli Reed, Court Horton (whose signature appears near the end of the ledger), and Charles Hazelton. About 10 pages have been cut out. Most of the entries are a straight accounting of receivables, although at the rear there is a full page given to the written contract between Peter Rickey and Court Horton, in which Rickey agrees to work for Horton for a one year term, for the sum of $120, commencing April 1, 1842; it is signed by both parties. Approx. 6.5 by 15.5 inches. From the "Fred W. Haida Collection" of Putnam County NY, stamped on end paper. Quarter brown leather with tan boards; no title. Boards and spine rubbed and marked. Front inner hinge loose, but holding.

300pp. Approx. 8.5 by 13.5 inches. Medical ledger and notes with the name Josiah H. Macy on leather placard on front cover and Wm. Austin Macy, M.D. stamped inside the front cover along with Work House Hospital, Blackwell's Island, New York. Josiah Henry Macy was born 1840 in New York City and died 1917 in South Orange, New Jersey. The name of his son (1862-1918) is stamped on nearly every subsequent page as well; he appears to have used the ledger as a journal for notes he took while attending the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, from which he graduated in 1885. Includes loose sheets such as a handwritten list of "Allowed" and "Not Allowed" foods and a notepad sheet from Kinsman's Pharmacy on Fourth Avenue in New York. The ledger's first entry, for William L. Carpenter, is dated March 27, 1859, and entries continue into 1860. Dr. Macy's notes at first are written in the blank spaces below his father's ledger entries and then make use of the blank pages that complete most of the book. These include a chart of the qualities of various stones and a "Geological Summary of Animals and Plants" and noting various chemistry formulas. He also copied an essay by Sir Alfred Power and a short bio of Rene Descartes. There is a recipe for "grandmother's salve" as well as notes from a lecture by Prof. McLane on obstetrics and from Dr. C.J. Stempel's Materia Medica, edition of 1859. The "diet list" of Dr. T.A. McBridge of No. 47 East 26th Street appears near the end of the ledger, as does a Dec 19, 1885 diagnosis of a chronic pain in the leg of Mr. H.A. Briggs and Macy's treatment and prescription (which included applying chloroform and oil), plus a "review of heavy metals" that includes an alarming number of prescriptions such as mercury to quiet the stomach and lead to stop diarrhea. In 1888 Dr. Macy was transferred to work at the New York City Asylum for the Insane on Hart's Island, according to his obituary in the annual report of the New York State Hospital Commission. He died in King's Park, Long Island.

Autograph letter signed by Edward John Eyre, the renowned Australian explorer of southern Australia & New South Wales, and the first European to explore the coastline of the Great Australian Bight. Drawing upon his experiences overlanding sheep in the 1830's, Eyre (1815 - 1901) applied for the job of laying out an overland route to the west. In June 1840 the expedition started out but failed. Sending back all but Baxter & Wylie, Eyre set out from Fowlers Bay to cross the Great Australian Bight. After much hardship & losing Baxter, Eyre & Wylie ran into and were saved by a French whaler which gave them supplies to continue. This letter was written in the period following Eyre's governor ship of the colony of Jamaica, during which time he had brutally suppressed the Morant Bay Rebellion, using government troops to kill innocent men, women & children. Eyre returned to England (August 1866) where those who called him a murderer founded a committee calling for him to be put on trial; he was charged with murder twice, but the cases were never pursued. The letter was written from 15 Charlotte Street, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, and dated 18th July 1868. Eyre comments on his journey from London to Edinburgh and thanks the recipient for "having my name put down for the Speaker's gallery for Thursday last". It is signed "Yours faithfully, E. Eyre". One can only imagine his journey was considerably easier than the trip from Adelaide to Perth!Folded letter on cream colored note paper with oval embossed stamp at the top, bearing the motto "Si Je Puis". Note measures 3 3/4 x 6 1/8". With one horizontal fold, traces of blue paper adhering to verso, where letter was removed from an album.

Also signed and dated at the right hand edge. Perfectly capturing Bernstein in the act of conducting, with three outlines of his entire figure, with 2 of the outlines showing Bernstein standing and conducting with arms outstretched, and one seated outline. The two standing figures are more lightly drawn, while the seated figure is drawn with a heavier line, creating a sense of great movement and energy. Georges Schreiber, prolific American artist, who began his career in the United States with the WPA, was a lithographer, painter, illustrator and watercolorist whose work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Whitney, among others.

A letter from a member of one of the early Dutch families from New Utrecht, Kings County (in what is today Brooklyn), to a William J. Lott concerning the petitioning of neighbors to lengthen the hedges where their fikes and hoopnets were set for fishing, which "would ruin the fisheries of the neighbours above, and I presume you will not act on it till you hear from them." Other names in the letter include John Vander Veer, William Bowhet, William Borkalow, and William D. Cortelyou. Peter Cortelyou also writes, with urgency, "Wm. D. Cortelyou is set out for Albany, the object of his visit is not know to me should it be concerning the fishery let me know as soon as posible (sic). The law for the regulation of fikes and hoopnets is as well formed as can be, it was passed in 1815." Perhaps there was a dispute within the family over this very valuable but declining shad fishery. John McPhee, in "Founding Fish" writes about the very Cortelyou who wrote this letter of complaint: "In 1789, Peter Cortelyou caught nearly sixteen thousand shad in the Narrows off New Utrecht-- the present-day Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He used fyke nets, balloonlike, held open with hoops. In the same place in the six seasons 1790-95, he caught about a hundred thousand shad. By the eighteen-twenties, according to his ledgers, his catch was down ninety-six per cent, the result of over-fishing". (p 183). 7 3/4 x 12 1/2".

Train was an American businessman, writer, one-time US presidential candidate, and involved with the Australian gold miner 'rebels' of the Eureka Rebellion, who offered him the presidency of the 'Australian Republic'. The autographed note reveals Train's interest in American presidential politics and the prospects for success of Rutherford B. Hayes. He writes, "Would it not be a strange coincidence if the "Great Unknown" presidential candidate should turn out to be the best known man in the world?". Hayes was derisively referred to as "The Great Unknown", "Rutherfraud", or "His Fraudulency" because he benefited from election fraud to win the US presidency, after Republicans contested the electoral vote count in the election of 1876. (Has anything changed?) Card stock, 4 1/2 x 7", signed "Geo. Francis Train". Written from "New York, May 1, P.E. 47" (1876), addressed to Jno. A. Burgess, Rochester. In the memoir which accompanies the autographed note, three chapters are devoted to Train's experiences in Australia: "Business Success in Australia, 1853- 1855"; "Gold Fever in New South Wales"; and "Other Australian Incidents". In Chapter XII "Other Australian Incidents - a Revolution", Train describes his involvement with the discontented gold miners of Ballarat in 1854, and writes: "The Five Star Republic", as it was called, was not to be anything but a dream, and the "revolution" of Ballarat was only a nightmare". He goes on to explain how he assisted the head of the insurrection, James McGill, who was American, escape with his life. NY: D. This note, dated June 8, 1853, records $1,000 borrowed from I. Blood by R & F. P. Ellis, with a dute date of December 11, 1853. A notarized document dated December 10, 1853, notes that the notary, A. Post Campell of No. 67 Wall Street, presented the note to a "person attending at the place of business of R & J.P. Ellis" but it was refused. Isaish Blood is identified on the note as being of Ballston, where he was a noted producer of scythes and axes. "His tools became well-known throughout the Western Hemisphere, and lumbermen were proud to have the name "I. Blood" stamped on their axes. In the Civil War, Blood manufactured an order of battle-axes for a Massachusetts artillery company in the Union Army measuring two feet long (resembling a short, slightly curved sword). (Lost Industries of the Kaydeross Valley: A History of Manufacturing in Ballston Spa, New York, 2007). The hamlet of Bloodville is named for him. 8 x 10", on pale blue paper, with receipt for promissory note attached at the front with seal. Very good.
