A nurse's photographic record of Base Hospital 116 at Bazoilles-sur-Meuse, France during World War 1, humorously refered to by the Americans as "Bacillus on Mush". (1) The nurse, who is not immediately identifiable, worked at New York Presbyterian Hospital, the hospital that seemed to supply most of the personel for this field hospital. The Officers in the large pre-departure photographs are also pictured in this photograph- "Officers of the American Expeditionary Forces and the Baker mission. (Source available on request but internet location is not permitted in the description). Oblong 4to photograph album, approx. 15 x 11". Faux leather covers, black album pages, tied binding. Pages are extremely brittle and chipped and the album is essentially disbound. 50 pp album, the first 23 pages with real photographs & ephemera on both sides of the page, most with legible pencil notation on quite a few of the pictures. The following 23 pages are blank (and in better condition than the previous 23pp); the last 4 pp with ephemera. The photographs are very intimate - snapshots of friends, colleagues, the operating theater, the barracks, etc. Ephemera in the album includes includes:1. Names and Addresses: Officers, Nurses and Enlisted Personnel Base Hospital 116 A.E.F. 18pp pamphlet with wrappers, with many annotations correcting addresses for the people listed and some people crossed out (deceased?)2. "Index to Photographs Taken by Members of Base Hospital No. 116. 1- Each photograph is numbered on the back.2- The number on each photograph corresponds with the same number on the index.3- A brief description of each photograph including date, location and individual, has been named to the best of my ability. R. Mc Intosh"6pp typescript index listing 108 photographs. On the few photographs where it is possible to see the verso, the number on the back corresponds with this list. 3. Base Hospital #116. 10pp typescript list of personnel with their age, next of kin & address. Paperclipped.4. Base Hospital 116 Bulletin, November 1, 1919. Photostat, 5pp listing contact details and what people are doing. For example "practising (sic) medicine; principal of schools; import and export business; to be married on Nov. 11". A possible owner of the album could be Miss Helen Kerr, later Mrs. Ernest Greene Jr, whose wedding is reported in a pair of captioned newspaper photographs in the album, although neither her name nor that of her husband are listed in any of the personnel lists so it may not be her album. A fascinating contemporary & intimate photographic record of life at a field hospital during World War 1. (1) Gavin, Lettie. "American Women in World War 1. They Also Served".

Collection of 55 Australian views, mounted on brown card, stamped (not printed) in purple ink at the top "W.H. Farmborough, Producer of Stereo-Panoramic Views". Each card is titled by hand on the verso at the time of issue, and numbered sequentially from 1534 to 1589, with a remnant of silver-gilt edges on the cards. Farmborough was a stereographer based in Sydney, issuing local stereoviews, and other details about him are not known. There are 8 cards of Melbourne (mostly the Botanic Gardens); 14 cards of Sydney; 18 cards of the Blue Mountains & Nepean River area; 13 cards of coastal views from Wollongong to Bondi & Randwick. They are slightly rubbed at edge and dusty, but the images are dark and crisp. It seems likely that one card is a picture of dogs penned on Mt. Kosciusko, possibly Mawson's dogs, being acclimatized before his trip to the Antarctic. The card is titled on the back "Sleigh Dogs Mt. Karainskd" (sp?). Huskies sit in their fenced enclosures with their dog houses visible, and they are named "Mawson", "Terror" and one which we cannot read. The views from this region include Mt. Kosciusko, badly misspelled Mt. Kiscincko, and there is one view of the summit, with the owner in his motor car posed before the cairn at the top. Other views include a Spring race meeting at Randwick, Port Jackson, Bondi Beach, The Spit, Middle Harbour, Thirrel, North Harbour from Rose Bay, various Blue Mtn. views, Wollongong, Belmore Falls, Katoomba, the Nepean River, Caves House at the Jenolean Caves, Sydney Heads, RMS Osterley homeward bound from Sydney, RMS Ormande at Circular Quay, Rushcutter's Bay, Centennial Park, Mosman's Bay, Lavender Bay, 2 of the Botanical Gardens Sydney, Bourke St. Melbourne & 2 of Melbourne Zoo animals in their enclosures. Very interesting collection of private views of Australia at the beginning of the 20th century. Each card a somewhat unorthodox shape, slightly taller and less wide than usual, measuring 16.5 x 10.5 cms, 2 images per card each measuring 7x9 cm.

Wharton is contemplating pruning hollyhocks in front of a rose trellis, in quite a wild country garden. An avid gardener all her life, she designed elaborate gardens for her houses, first at The Mount and later at her houses in France. As an arbiter of taste during the Gilded Age, she influenced interior design & landscape architecture. Wharton later wrote "Italian Villas and Their Gardens", which introduces the more structured Italian gardens to the American audience. Cost £11,000. For dear Alfie, 1 January 1894 signed in initials F.W.P.P. The bridge still stands today having been refurbished in 1972 but the original writer mistakenly puts the Glengarry River when it is the La Trobe River. At the time of construction there was much debate about the delays and monies that were spent. The image measures 10x7.5 cm and the card 16.5x10.5.

The city of Beira was developed by the Portuguese Mozambique Company, which was founded in 1891 as a royal company in this Portuguese colony. In Beira the Company ran the post office & public administration, and founded a bank, but took advantage of local conscripted labor. Beira also played an important role as a key port and railroad terminus for the British land locked territories of Zambesia, Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Beira Railway was formed in 1892; by 1890 Cecil Rhodes had already pushed into the region around Salisbury (Harare) and the settlers there were demanding dependable transport. These photographs date from the colonial period in which the Mozambique Company administered Beira. Photographs taken by C. E. Hogg. Thirteen b&w photographs, 4 3/4 x 3 3/4" with titles handwritten on the verso. The titles are as follows: 'Beira' (a view of the city taken from the Indian Ocean); 'a street in the native village', 'men gathering coconuts', 'mother and child', 'Mozambique natives, the elder age 12 + 2 years married, the younger a rescued slave child'; 'a rescued slave girl'; 'Mozambique' (no further title; photo is of sailboats pulled up on a beach); 'Mozambique' (no title; photo is city harbor, taken from the water looking toward the city); 'hotel proprietor, Beira'; 'Gardens, Mozambique'; 'Mozambique boys'; 'Market, Mozambique'; and 'Mozambique hospital'. A few marks at the corners of some photographs, where they were removed from an album; one photo with a diagonal tear ('Gardens'), o/w quite bright.

A tribute in memoriam to Fairman Rogers, civil engineer involved with Alexander Dallas Bache in the U.S. Coastal Survey. Rogers was connected to the University of Pennsylvania as a student, professor and trustee. Rogers was a noted book collector in both engineering & horsemanship, whose collections were donated to the University. He had an early interest in photography, and the book alludes to a statement that attributes him as the designer of the Zootrope that Edward Muybridge used in his important horse photographs. "...a recent communication in "The Rider and Driver", it is due to his ingenious application of the principle of a Zootrope that Mr. Muybridge was enabled to show from his own photographs animals in motion. From this device of Professor Rogers, so says the writer, have followed the Biography, the Cinematograph, and all similar adaptations." He is also said to have contributed to improvements on the first typewriters. Written by Prof. Horace Furness, Shakespearean scholar and brother in law to Fairman Rogers.
