An irreplacable record of the upper Yangtze River as it existed before the building of the Three Gorges Dam (construction began in 1994; completed in 2008), with illustrations and photogravures of natural and historic landmarks now partially or completely submerged by the river. Although some historic monuments were saved by being dismantled and moved, there are doubtless thousands of undiscovered and unexplored sites which have simply been lost as a result of the dam's construction. The famed terra cotta warriors of Xian, for example, an astonishing funerary monument representing the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China & consisting of 8,000 full size warriors, was discovered by a farmer in 1974, entirely by accident. The author, a Scottish photographer, lived and worked in China in the early twentieth century; the images included here are from the 1920s. Illustrations include the following: The Pierced Cliff, Red Rock, Bright Rapid, Ch'ing T'an Village, Yellow Cat Gorge, The Witches Gorge, Otter's Cave Rapid, The Temple of the Yellow Peaks, The Mountain of Learning, Bridge at Wan Hsien, The wind Box Gorge, Lamp Light Gorge, The City of Temples.4to. Bound with a bright gold leaf covered spine and corners; with black embossed bamboo patterned silk and gilt lettering. Illustrated with 50 tipped in plates from photographs, each with a page of descriptive notes; sketches by Lt.Col. H G Gandy. The plates are of China's great waterway, the Yangtze Kiang and also include 12 hand-coloured tipped in photographs. A magnificent production.

This issue includes the article "Germany in the Workshop: An Industrial Portfolio And the Problems of an American photographer abroad"; it describes Bourke-White's imprisonment on charges of espionage, "an attempt by a foreign government to blue-print Germany's vital industrial development in the Ruhr Valley" (p89, with 5 full page b&w plates; 4 of her German photographs, 1 of Otis Steel, Cleveland). The true first edition, from the "Hydrographie" atlas of "Voyage Au Pole Sud", Ferguson # 3184. Spence mistakenly records Spence #3059 as the lst edition. This map is printed on heavy rag paper, is much larger & more detailed than #3059, & bears the blind stamp "Gide Editeur Paris" as do all plates from the original edition of "Voyage au Pole Sud". The map shows the area lat. 63-67 degrees, long. l26-l40 degrees, the Terre Adelie & Cote Clarie. Dumont D'Urville sighted land & correctly located the South Magnetic Pole. This is illustrated in a small inset map which also marks the magnetic pole according to Hanstech & Duperrey. A most important & attractive map.

Panoramic albumen print mounted in 5 panels of a pebbled & flat grained cloth over boards portfolio, measuring 39 1/2 x 5 1/4". Bernard Holtermann arrived in Sydney as a German immigrant in 1858, and eventually made his fortune in the gold fields. In his gratitude to his adopted country, he desired to make large photographic prints and panoramas and display them at International Exhibitions to vaunt the advantages of Australia to the rest of the world. He constructed a tower in Sydney 73' high overlooking the harbor and city for the sole purpose of taking panoramic photographs. Boake arrived in Sydney the same year as Holtermann with some knowledge of photography. He seems to be preferred by Sydney society for his charming miniatures, but here took advantage of the tower to create his own panorama. Each of the five sections is annotated beneath. The panorama starts at the North Shore, and progresses around the harbor to the South West & the entrance to the Parramatta River. Somewhat faded, with old 5 sets of old thumb tack holes in the margins, top right corner chipped in margin, sml. ink mark in top margin of center panel.

This small collection was most likely to have been once in the possession of either Frank Hurley or John King Davis, both of whom were intimately involved in the BANZARE expedition of 1929-30, from which this collection derives. Hurley was the photographer on this voyage - it was his third trip, having photographed first for Mawson, and later for Shackleton on his fateful "Endurance" expedition. Davis was the captain of the ship "Discovery" in 1929-30, and had previously captained Shackleton's "Nimrod" 1907-9 & Mawson's "Aurora" 1911-14. The collection includes five unsigned Hurley photographs of the ship "Discovery", 18.5 x 23.5 cms. These include the fore deck and riggings; the "Discovery" being tugged out of harbor, a front view; another of the "Discovery" in harbor, a side-rear view; a view of the forward deck & rigging; a view of three officers on deck in naval dress, one of whom appears to be Davis. The meteorological log has a label reading "Abstract of Meteorological Log --- Kept on board "Discovery" at Heard Island and Kerguelen Island between November 12th and December 3rd, 1929, and between February 8th and March 2nd 1930", with a Department of Defence stamp, Hydrographic Branch, signed and dated 30.10.3? (2nd number of year is unclear). The pages are hinged together randomly, and appear to be in Davis' handwriting. We would hazard a guess that these were log sheets released to Davis as a personal memento of the voyage.

LaRoche, Frank, photographer. Photograph album of Alaskan views, ca. 1901. Oblong 4to, 34 cardboard leaves with 38 albumen photos, most printed, some written on the negative in the lower margin "LaRoche, Photo, Seattle, Wash." with a negative number and caption describing the view. Bound in the original brown cloth album, with gilt "Photographs" on the front cover. Very good condition. The University of Washington holds an important archive of LaRoche's works, cataloguing 310 of his works. A search of their excellent website (http://content.lib.washington.edu/FLaRoche/) would seem to indicate that 21 of the 38 photos in this album do not appear to be in the University's collection, and another view is a variant. This album comes from an old collection of a prominent Hudson River family, compiled by a contemporary traveller's on their trip to Alaska. Other Alaskan titles were in the library, and a copy of Harriman's "Alaska Expedition". There is perhaps a connection between Harriman, who was also a prominent Hudson River valley resident, and the owner of this album but we have not been able to ascertain it definitively. Includes views of Sitka, Fort Wrangle, Metlakahtla, totem poles, Juneau, glaciers & native Americans. The following negative numbers do not appear to be held in the University of Washington's collection: 1117, 1182, 1248, 1252, 1177, 1244, 1253, 1262, 1270, 1170, 1171, 1247, 1204, 225 (variant), 318, 239, 325, 188, 198, 227, 321, 328 1/2.

Byrd, Richard. Personal Photograph Album by member of Byrd's Antarctic Expedition II. (Dr. W.B. Highet?) Approximately 480 b&w original snapshot photographs from all facets of Byrd's 2nd expedition. Mostly 3x2", some 5x3", all are tipped in on both sides of black card sheets in an old quarto size scrap album. Highest was a doctor and a member of the crew of the "Bear of Oakland", the ship that relieved Byrd's expedition. The 1st photo in the album is a shot of a hospital, which he has signed in the corner, which leads us to believe the album is his collection of snapshots. The rest of the album is a comprehensive record of activities performed on the expedition, both at sea and on shore. From the Dry Dock in Dunedin, New Zealand to the Southern Journey under sail. It includes crewman working and relaxing on board, and how they maneuvered through ice. Also includes shots of the expedition flag ship "Jacob Ruppert"; the Citroen tractors; of Lincoln Ellsworth and his ship, and a great shot of Ellsworth's plane body being winched out of the ship. Ellsworth sought to fly across the Antarctic & Byrd provided much assistance and information, especially on the weather. We also see all the expedition hardware - the Citroen tractor & Byrd's airplanes & the autogiro also sledge dogs & penguins. Some notables photographed include Lt. Robert English, Commander Bendik Johansen, sailing master; Edward Roos, cartographer. In total, there are 16 named portraits. Besides assisting Byrd, the "Bear" surveyed the Ross Sea coastline, recording many variations from the original sightings of the Terra Nova. The few photos of Lincoln Ellsworth and his ship, the "Wyatt Earp" are very interesting, and show just how closely the two expeditions cooperated. Ellsworth stayed in the Antarctic from Oct 1934 through Jan 1935, hoping to fly over the continent, but was hampered by the weather. In all, a fascinating firsthand pictorial account of an Antarctic expedition. $3000

The photographs are unfaded, clean and bright. Nine of the photographs are recognizable as Texas shots. There are three San Antonio shots; a train at the station, a newly completed building with "I Weber Saloon" visible in background, and a street scene with the "Hugo & Schmeltzer" building. There is a front view of the Alamo. There are five views of El Paso; including the Customs House, the train station and the Sheldon Building, housing the offices of the Texas & Pacific Railway and Drs. C.H. Bishop & Dr. Ida Bishop.
