Robert Peel was the Conservative Prime Minister of the UK from December 1834 to April 1835, and again for almost five years from 1841 to 1846. He created the modern concept of the police force while Home Secretary, and it is from his name that English police are called "bobbies" or "peelers" in Ireland. As Home Secretary, he deeded vast tracts of land in the new Swan River Colony to his cousin Thomas, now Perth in Western Australia. ALS addressed from Whitehall, Nov. 2 (no year), thanking G. Hayden for the note he wrote at the request of Dr. Williams re: the recent death of the old governess Madame Girardin. Written by a secretary, and signed boldly, Robert Peel. 5x8", with 2 old folds, very good condition. The Baxter print was issued in 1853, shortly after Peel's death. It has a stamped mount, with the address 11 & 12 Northampton Square, and mounted on card. Slightly sunned with a couple of marks in the outer margins.
