Homme de l'ile de Paques./ Chef de l'ile de Ste. Christine, L'une des iles Marquises dans le Grand Ocean.

Lille: Castiaux. Separately published wood block illustration based on William Hodges drawings for Cook's second voyage, with original pouchoir color in green, blue, orange & gold. The man of Easter Island is on the left, and the chief of the Saint Christine Island is on the right. The description beneath states that Easter Island was discovered in 1721 by Rogewin, visited by Captain Cook March 13, 1774. The inhabitants live in anarchy "la plus complette", survive on potatoes and because there is no sweet water, they drink sea water (!). The description of the chief of the island of St. Christine, one of the Marquesas, states that Cook visited there April 9, 1774. The breadfruit found there are the best of all the Southern ocean islands. The chief's name is "Honoo". Colophon printed on the margin stating this was published in Lille by Castiaux (Jean-Baptiste), printed by Blocquel (Simon Francois). 14 1/4 x 9", untrimmed, in excellent condition. Item #11571
