Each volume has several charmingly engraved plates, to illustrate the voyages of Columbus, Vespucci, Cortez, Vasco da Gama, Magellen, Drake, Cavendish, Raleigh, Schouten and La Maire, Monk, Dampier, Cowley, Woodes, Rogers, Shelvocke, Roggewein, Anson, Ulloa, Byron, Wallace, Carteret, Bougainville, Phipps, Sparrman, Portlock and Dixon, Thevenot, Chardin, Le Compte and du Halde, Bruce, De Pages, Thunberg, Wraxall, Hearne, Mungo Park, Damberger, Barrow, Levaillant, and Sonnini. Includes sections on travels in the United States in 1788 by Brissot de Warville, and Travels in the United States and Canada by Weld and the Duke de la Rochefoucauld Liancourt from 1795 - 1797. There is also material on Sydney, Australia, including Governor Philip's Botany Bay, Lt. Shortland and Captain Marshall. A volume on shipwrecks includes De Laval, the loss of the Wager, the Centaur, the Grosvenor Indiaman and the Halsewell Indiaman. Another volume contains narratives of captivity in Russia, India, Algeria and others. Capt. James Cook's three voyages are covered in entirety in two volumes, including a folding map frontis showing Cook's tracks; the third voyage has a folding frontis of the death of Capt. Cook at Owhyhee. Volume X and Volume XX contain general indices. 12mo, half tan calf with blue marbled boards. Covers rubbed, corners bumped, spines slt marked.
