Item #13627 The Ice Islands, seen the 9th of Janry: 1773. William Hodges, Capt. James Cook.

The Ice Islands, seen the 9th of Janry: 1773.

London: Strahan & Cadell, 1777. An important print that illustrates sailing life in the cold regions from Cook's 2nd voyage. The ship (it is unclear whether it is the Resolution or the Adventure) is off to the side of a large iceberg, and men in four skiffs are either harvesting ice or shooting sea birds. The print is dated January 9th - eight days later, they were to be the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Published Feb 1st, 1777. Copper engraving, a dark impression, engraved by B.T. Pouncy, with 3 original vertical folds. A little mild spotting in the margins, very good overall. Item #13627
