Lowell, Mass: James P. Walker, 1853. Second edition. The author, a Lowell Mass. doctor and advocate of public health, cites compelling reasons for this new edition, including the recent discovery of gold in California and Australia and its powerful impact on China, and the upcoming renewal of the East India Company charter in light of resolving the "Opium Question". Allen further notes that he is preparing an article on the abuse of opiates in Britain and America, and requests information from merchants, druggists and medical professionals.
Contents include a lengthy section titled 'Profits of the Trade' (pp 59 -65): "We have then the immense sum of $480,000,000 expended by China, within the last half century, for this single article alone; and all this too in express violation of the repeated edicts of the Emperor." (p62). Followed by 'Financial Effect on China', and 'Responsibility of its Results'.
Nathan Allen (1813 - 1889) was a leading voice on the social issues of the day and a prolific author, writing on physical and mental culture, heredity, public medicine, obstetrics, the education of women and the humane treatment of prisoners.
