The author examines extraterritoriality and the protection it offered to aliens in China, and its move towards a closed door policy, although Koo maintains that the attitude to foreigners had always been favorable and that restrictions were imposed due to foreign abuse of generous immunities granted. Part of the Studies in History, Economics and Public Law edited by the Faculty of Political Science of Columbia University, Volume L, Number 2.

Contents include: the pre-conventional period (up to 1842); the conventional period including extraterritorial jurisdiction in China; ports and foreign settlements; alien merchants in the interior of China; Christian missionaries; and protections for aliens and alien property.
