London: David Bogue, 1853. Hardcover. From the 'Home Lesson Books' series. Scarce wood block illustrated children's volume, which includes engravings of a kangaroo and cockatoo. The kangaroo is described as "found in Australia. They have very long hind legs and thick tails. Under the breast, the female has a curious pouch, into which the young ones jump when they think the are in danger." (p28). Other animals illustrated include buffalo and polar bears.

16mo, 96pp. In the original plum gilt and blind stamped boards, with title in gilt at front board. Cloth sunned, short split at spine, a bit marked at rear board. Internally, inner hinge cracked, a few pages marked, a few short tears at page edges. The kangaroo illustration clean. Early owner name in pencil, dated 1854, at front paste down.
