Account of the Voyages Undertaken by Order of his Present Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere...

Dublin: James Potts, 1775. Hardcover. First Irish edition. Cook's 1st voyage, during which he discovered the east coast of Australia. Includes a general chart of the voyages in South Pacific, from America to the west coast of Australia, on thick laid paper. Pirated Irish editions were generally the first edition accessible to the wider public. Sabin 30935 (no maps or plates called for). Not in Hill or the National Maritime Museum Catalogue. Spence 'Cook Bibliography' p.10 "Although the reader is promised illustrations to the work, few copies have them." Signature of Edward B. Johnson 1785 on front free endpaper. Text is tastefully inked out on page 469 of vol 1, as Mr Johnson obviously wanted to censor this passage. 8vo, 2 vols. (12), (xxviii) 489pp, 1 large folding map of "Chart of part of the South Sea shewing the tracts and discoveries made by his majesties ships Dolphin Tamer Swallow and Endeavour", 1 table & 3 plates (&) (10) 539pp (ii), 4 b&w plates, 1 of Australian natives and New Zealand Maori, another of New Zealand. Orig. calf boards, corners worn down exposing the under board, nevertheless a lovely copy. Boards a bit marked, handsomely re-spined with matching calf, red & black title & volume labels stamped in gold. See Beddie 661, James William's edition. Item #8254
