Nova Orbis Tabula, in Lucem Edita, A. F. De Wit. Amstelodami cum Privilegio Potentiss D. Dominorum Ordinum Hollandia et Westrische.

Amsterdam: De Wit, c. 1690. A most attractive double hemisphere map of the world, with smaller polar insets. Handsomely decorated with allegorical vignettes of the four seasons in the border. The first edition of the map is recorded as Shirley 451- he records the 2nd state adding a border & some cherubs to the plate as well as Nova Guinea and Quiri Regio on the left hand hemisphere. This edition, (Shirley 499) is further altered in that California as an island has a pointed tip (instead of a flat top), and by the insertion ot some of the Great Lakes instead of the single open-ended inland sea shown previously. De Wit was granted privilege in 1688, and included a line to that effect under the title. Australia is illustrated post-Tasman, showing the tip of Tasmania & Cape York Peninsula, the full West coast of Australia. The bottom of Cape Horn is the only geographical feature on the Antarctic polar projection. Copper engraving with old color refreshed. Size: 48 x 57 cm. (19 x 22½ in.) [HxW]. Bottom center fold strengthened, with small margin tear strengthened. Overall in very good condition. A most attractive world map. References: Shirley, R.W. (World) 499. See 451 for first edition plate 333. Item #10684
