View Near Fort Montgomery. (No. 18 of the Hudson River Portfolio).

New York: Henry I. Megarey, 1826. A large aquatint engraving from the important "Hudson River Portfolio", a collection of twenty engravings by the master printmaker John Hill (1770-1850) after a series of watercolors made by William Guy Wall (1792 – 1864), a forerunner to the Hudson River school painters, who had made an extensive painting tour of the Hudson River Valley. The Portfolio was published as aquatints by Henry Megarey in New York in the early 1820's; the collection of 20 engravings is considered a cornerstone in the evolution of printmaking and landscape painting in America. Charming view in the Hudson Highlands from the Garrison area focusing on simple raft in the middle of the river, looking down towards Bear Mountain, with Dunderberg behind and Anthony's Nose on the left. 21 1/2 x 16" plus margins, original coloring. In early Hogarth style frame by Arthur Ackermann Gallery, New York. Mat somewhat discolored leaving a light border around print margin, otherwise in very good condition. Item #11463
