Clover Nook, Auckland N.Z. Original pencil sketch tipped on to a scrap album sheet, ca. 1860.

12.75 x 8.5 cms. Delicate sketch of a cottage with verandah, 2 stories, a picket fence, and part of a house next door. Gillies Ave, Lot 21 was originally purchased as a crown grant in 1845 by William Swainson, the Attorney - General; sold to John Stokes 1848, and then to Andrew Buchanan in 1857. "Clovernook" was constructed between 1857 - 1859. Charles Stitchbury purchased the property in 1861, and enlarged the home in 1864. The land was subdivided in 1906, creating Clovernook Rd. and was demolished in the 1960's for construction of a viaduct. This sketch appears to be of the original cottage, and appeared in a scrap album on the same sheet as an albumen photo of Fijian Natives & hut, ca. 1860. Paper is watermarked 1836 with the name " J _ _ _EN & SON ", possibly J. Sheen & Son. A charming and carefully executed sketch. Item #11861
