The plates are arranged in chronological order and accompanied by extracts and comments from Robert's travel journal; current photographs show many of these sites as they appear today.

120 color plates include: Alexandria, the Giza Ferry at Cairo, the Great Mosque at Siout, the temple of Dendera, the Temple of Luxor, Aswan, the temple of Wadi Dabod, the Temple of Dandour, the great temple of Abu Simbel, the temples of Karnak, the obelisk of Ramses II at Luxor, the colossi of Memnon, and the pyramids of Giza Seen from the Nile.
