One of the most successful of Verne's works, this early science fiction piece was the first of two in the "Adventures of Captain Hatteras," series that was originally published in Paris some 10 years earlier. The second volume, entitled "The Field of Ice" is refered to on the last line of text in the book as a teaser.
Small 8vo, [2], [iv], 314pp, all edges gilt. Frontispiece & 24 full page b&w illustrations by Edward Riou, and another 129 b&w vignettes in text. Bound by Burn & Co., with their label inside rear cover. Original green pictorial cloth stamped with gilt and black illustration & title. All edges guilt. Covers are gently rubbed at edges and at spine ends. Neat ink presentation inscription on front free endpaper dated "Xmas 1874". illustrating the earlier printing than the date on the title page.
