Cincinnati: Swormstedt and Poe, 1853. Hardcover. A monthly periodical devoted to literature and religion. Includes a number of great engravings of American views: Long Island: 'Cortelyou House, a Relic of 1776'. The Cortelyou house was taken by the British in the American Revolution during the Battle of Brooklyn, and used to fire upon Patriots who were trying to escape by crossing Gowanus Creek.

Other engravings include: View of the Ohio [River], Near Maysville Ky, Engraved by Natl. Kinsey; and another Kinsey engraving entitled, 'Grand Tower (Mississippi River)' showing the Tower Rock, a massive rock formation and landmark island, feared by Native Americans for being the abode of a demon, and later used by river pirates whose hideout here was finally destroyed by the US army in 1803.

Complete with the supplement, a folding panorama of the 1851 Great Exhibition in London ('The Palace of Glass Erected in London for the Industrial Exhibition of 1851').

4to, b&w frontis, 563pp, b&w illus throughout. One half brown calf with black buckram covers; gilt title at spine, with Mrs. J. R. Hines in gilt at base of spine. Spine is gently rubbed; internally, early signatures loose, scattered fox spotting at plates; as is. Good + condition. Item #13177
