Folio of 40 chromolithographs, complete, depicting in costume all the major characters in Wagner's Ring, by the costume designer Carl Emil Doepler. 13 1/2" x 18". Includes all the Gods: Wotan (appears in 3 plates), Freia, Donner, Froh, Erda, Loge and the Norns; the Walsungs: Siegmund, Sieglinde, and Siegfried (2 plates); the Valkyries: Brunnhilde (2 plates), Waltraute, Helmwige, Gerhilde, Siegrune, Schwertleite, Ortlinde, Grimgerde, and Rossweisse; the Rhinemaidens (plate entitled "Rheintochter"); the Giants: Fasolt and Fafner; the Nibelungs: Alberich (2 plates) and Mime; the Mortals: Gunther (3 plates), Gutrune, Hagen, and Hunding. In addition, plates entitled: Junger Manne, Alter Manne, Barde und Kinder, Knechte mit Jagdbeute; and Mannen Gunthers. In a portfolio case, gray cloth, with highly decorative front cover: the title in blue and gray around a circular design of broken spear and sword crossed inside the gold ring, and surrounded by gilt sunbursts; and with C. E. Doepler's signature in pale gray beneath the central design. Flaps expertly restored. Beautiful color plates with characters in greatly detailed costume, in very good condition, with only gentle rubbing at corners. OCLC 68297944 cites 3 copies - NYPL, Univ. of Illinois & Ransom/Texas. Only one copy appeared at auction between 1975 - 2005, in London in 1993. Item #13416
