London: Witherby & Co, 1912. A series of three proof plates, printed in different shades of ink, but uncolored, one signed by G. M. Mathews & H. Gronvold, with Gronvold's instructions "Print like this" with a crossed out section. Also a note "prove E. minor, the same as this" which is crossed out. There are several pencilled numbers, 72, 67 & 134. Paper size 13 3/4 x 9 3/4". Ca. 1912. Mathews published his masterwork "Birds of Australia" from 1910 through 1928. In their published form, the lithographs were hand colored. The Fairy Penguin is found on the southern coast of Australia, most notably on Philip Island. Couple of very slt. edge ruffles o/w vgc.
