Fascinating accounts of shipwreck, the Barbary coast slave trade, the city of Tripoli, Prussian field marshal Blucher (fought against Napoleon), St. Helena & Buonaparte, the looting of Lubeck in 1806, fortunes of a Meckelenburg officer on the Russian battle field in 1812, and the return of St. Germain to France, from the East.

One of the 10 accounts, Chapter III is titled 'Schipbreuk van den Oostindie-Vaarder Cabalva, with content on the 1818 wreck of the ship under the command of Captain 'Darymple' (sic). The Cabalva, a 1200 ton British East Indiaman under the command of Captain James Dalrymple, was en route to India & China and was wrecked off Cadargos, Carajos Reefs near Mauritius on the 7th of July 1818. Happily for part of the crew some casks of beer were saved, and moved to a location dubbed "Beer Island", where it was consumed over the following weeks.

16mo (6 1/2 x 4 1/4"), color frontispiece, viii, 195pp, 4 hand color ills, ads (3). Original three quarter mottled brown calf with blue marbled boards, gilt title to spine ('Natuur Voor Jeugd'). Covers gently rubbed at edges. Bookplate of the noted collector Gerrit Jan Honig - Zaandyk inside front cover, o/w very bright, very good.
