Ephemera. Four page letter with printed signature "Wm J Boone, Miss'y Bishop to China, New York, 21 April 1859", reproduced in the early 20th c. to accompany Occasional Paper No. 21. The Reverend, the first Episcopal missionary Bishop appointed to China, notes "China is now really open. The Emperor in his recent treaties with the four great Western nations, recognizes "the Ya-Soo Kiau, the religion of Jesus as teaching men to do good ... and permits them to propagate the doctrines of Christianity among his subjects and to pass everywhere in the country". The bishop requests $20,000 to pay the passage and one year's salary for new missionaries to China. 5 1/4 x 7 3/4". Facsimile handwriting, folded horizontally. Slt foxing at center of back page.
