New York: The Co-operative Building Plan Association, 1886. Hardcover. Many Hudson River building designs are included in this three volume folio set of loose plates, with 247 plates of the original 297.
The Builders' Portfolio was issued in three portfolios of designs aimed at an audience of architects, builders, and real estate people. The published designs were very popular, so much so that Shoppell patented the designs to prevent knock offs. Thousands of houses were built from Shoppell's designs. The designs were intended to offer sufficient information on construction & pricing to prevent those involved from losing money.
Each design accompanied by a color lithographed view of a house and layout called a "Color Sheet" for residential exterior paint to aid in color selection, as well as floor plans & elevations.
