Item #15866 Eastern Brazil (Globe Gore). Vincenzo Coronelli.

Eastern Brazil (Globe Gore).

ca. 1690. Part of the set for Coronelli's largest globes, from his Libro di Globi. Engraving of the eastern coast of Brazil, with Mare del Brasil and Il Mare del Paraguay. Fine uncolored copper engraved gore with tableau at lower right depicting Pope Alessandro VI dividing the lands of the new world between Spain and Portugal thereby resolving disputes over land that arose following the discoveries of Columbus. In contrast to the common practice of the day, Coronelli was fastidious in only plotting what had been discovered, with notations citing the particular voyages or explorer; a notation at the lower left describes the discovery of "Il Fiume Paraguay" in 1512. Paper size: 13 3/4 x 19 3/4". Very light scattered fox spotting, otherwise very good. Item #15866
