Pineapple, Tab I from "Nurnberische Hesperides" Johann Volckamer.

Pineapple, Tab I from "Nurnberische Hesperides"

Nuremburg: 1708-1714. First edition. A rare double-size folding plate of a pineapple from Volckamer's work on exotic citrus fruit, published from 1708 to 1714. Tab I is one of 4 double-size plates of pineapples, this pineapple depicted springing from its foliage, brown with striking red-tipped highlights. Copper engraving with later hand color, 12 1/2 x 18 1/4" with a small 1/4" margin on top margin, with the others larger. The print includes a hummingbird and 2 large bugs with a small tropical scene in the bottom margin. Delsenbach, fecit. Margin added lower left, slt. into the rule at the plate margin with a 1/2" tear expertly repaired. Volckamer's elegant prints of then-exotic citrus are pictured in a large scale, seeming to "float" in the skies above landscape scenes below. The locations are purported to be in Nuremberg and northern Italy, but some are strikingly tropical in aspect. Dunthorne # 323. Item #15956
