Item #15957 Pineapple, Tab II from "Nurnberische Hesperides" Johann Volckamer.

Pineapple, Tab II from "Nurnberische Hesperides"

Nuremburg: 1708-1714. First edition. A rare double-size folding plate of a pineapple from Volckamer's work on exotic citrus fruit, published from 1708 to 1714. Tab II is one of 4 double-size plates of pineapples, the pineapple depicted in monumental proportions in the foreground of the sky, with a tarantula in the top right corner, with a Dutch-inspired harbor scene, springing from its foliage, brown with striking red-tipped highlights. Copper engraving with later hand color, 13 3/8 x 16 3/16" with a 1/2" or more margin. Jos. A Montalegre, fecit. Margin added lower left. Volckamer's elegant prints of then-exotic citrus are pictured in a large scale, seeming to "float" in the skies above landscape scenes below. The locations are purported to be in Nuremberg and northern Italy, but some are strikingly tropical in aspect. Dunthorne # 323. Item #15957
