Item #15958 Pineapple, Tab III from "Nurnberische Hesperides" Johann Volckamer.

Pineapple, Tab III from "Nurnberische Hesperides"

Nuremburg: 1708-1714. First edition. A rare double-size folding plate of a pineapple from Volckamer's work on exotic citrus fruit, published from 1708 to 1714. Tab III is one of 4 double-size plates of pineapples, the golden orange pineapple depicted in the center of the print springing full grown from it's foliage, with a tropical scene at the bottom margin, including a group of two natives, one carrying a large water jug on his head. A slightly less exuberant depiction than its companion prints. Copper engraving with later hand color, 9 3/16 x 14 5/16" with large borders. Jos. A Montalegre, fecit. Margin added lower left. Volckamer's elegant prints of then-exotic citrus are pictured in a large scale, seeming to "float" in the skies above landscape scenes below. The locations are purported to be in Nuremberg and northern Italy, but some are strikingly tropical in aspect. Dunthorne # 323. Item #15958
