Harborne, United Kingdom: Chad Valley, ca. 1910. "Kompactum" edition. An early board game featuring an aeronautical and geographical contest, with a wide variety of thrilling disasters for players to contend with en route. One of the notable Chad Valley Games. Chad Valley is an English toy maker which began as a printing and bookbinding business established by Anthony Bunn Johnson in Birmingham in the early 19th century. Players begin a 100 point course in London, and fly over Glasgow and Dublin across the Atlantic to Montreal. From Canada to Japan and then Australia, marking Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Onslow and New Zealand. The return route to Windsor Castle leads from South Africa to Cairo, Rome, Paris, Berlin and Dover. The planes illustrated are of the Wright and Bleriot type, and one resembles a Rumpler Taube, a pre World War I monoplane. There is a color illustration of a major site in each city, with London's illustration showing the Thames with important buildings beyond. The obstacles encountered by players include: "broken rudder, back to 70" at Berlin, and "falls into the Liffey, go back to 3" at Dublin. With a two fold chromolithographic playing board, with 4 painted metal markers in the form of planes. (One plane is intact on its stand; two are off their stands but the stands are present; one stand is missing). There are no cards, counters, di or metal shaker with this game. 54 x 26 cm. Board in very good condition, the box base somewhat flattened, the edges to the top mostly separated but present, image a bit dusty but good+. Fine. Item #16491
