Adelaide: 1909. Postcard. Three printed photo postcards of the new electric tram system in Adelaide, Australia, opened on March 9, 1909, with the first titled "In Memoriam, In Affectionate Remembrance of the Adelaide Horse Cars, which succumbed to an electric shock, on March 9th, 1909, After thirty years' faithful service, "Gone, but not forgotten", and showing a horse drawn car on the left side, and on the right, an electric tram with overhead wires. Divided back, posted to an address in Fremantle, and with canceled stamp. The second card with the caption "The Official Opening of Adelaide's Electric Tram System, March 9th, 1909. The First Car driven by Mrs. Price."; showing the first tram car bedecked with flowers and flags, a huge crowd in attendance. Mrs. Price, the wife of Premier Thomas Price, drove the car from Hackney Depot to Kensington and back again, with the help of an engineer. Divided back, posted to an address in Fremantle, and with canceled stamp. Slightly creased upper left corner. The third postcard with caption "Electric Car North Adelaide, S. A." Copyright J. Taylor, showing a single electric tram car, No. 43, with conductor leaning out of the rear, passengers climbing on board. Divided back, posted to an address in Fremantle, and with canceled stamp. Slight diagonal crease. The first and second postcards with Turner Bros., Porter Street, Parkside" printed on the verso; the third with Advance Australia stamp on verso. A wonderful small archive.
