Washington DC: Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army, 1944. Wade-Giles is one of the best known systems for romanization, or the use of the Latin alphabet to write Chinese. It was developed by Thomas Wade in the mid nineteenth century and completed by Herbert Giles's Chinese English Dictionary of 1892. Wade was a British ambassador to China, the first professor of Chinese at Cambridge, and the publisher of the first Chinese textbook in English. Giles was a British diplomat in China. The Wade-Giles system was the most popular one throughout most of the 20th century. 4to, 90pp, Glossary 8pp. Stiff paper wrappers, spiral bound, title in black at front cover.
