Maung Shaw Loo (1839 - 1929), who was Bucknell University's first international student (Class of 1864) and who was the first Burmese native to study in the United States. After his graduation from the University, Shaw Loo was admitted to the newly organized Charity Hospital Medical College in Cleveland, Ohio, where in 1867, he obtained his medical degree. President Andrew Johnson was introduced to Dr. Shaw Loo and later provided a personal recommendation for him to the King of Burma, who not only allowed Shaw Loo to practice medicine in Burma but appointed him as a Prince. A fine, high resolution, sharp image of the impressive Dr Shaw Loo in full traditional Burmese costume standing next to a black silk upholstered chair which appeared in numerous Mowry portraits. Albumen full length portrait on stiff card with Mowry's name and town on verso. 2.25 x 3.25 cm. Item #18190
