Ca. 1757. Copper engraved hand colored map of the American east coast, with an inset view of New York City, here "Neu Jorck sive Neu Amsterdam". This is the important fourth state showing the city of Boston for the first time. Here it is spelled "Briston"; later states will correct the spelling. The map has the Lotter imprint; Lotter continued the map making business following the death of Matthias Seutter, his father in law. The cartouche has a scene of natives and gods presenting gifts to a seated monarch. The view of New York, one of the earliest, shows the city with the southern end of Manhattan at the extreme right, and a small fence which will eventually become the wall of Wall Street. The Delaware river is shown correctly as separate from the Hudson River, and the boundaries of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now shown with printed lines, rather than the previous practice, which was to leave the boundaries up to the map colorist. With native American tribes & villages, many animals, wild and domesticated. 23 x 20". Good impression, vivid original color. Tooley, The Mapping of America, p292, #26a. Very good condition.
