"The English at the North Pole" was the first part, and "The Desert of Ice" (Le Desert de Glace) the second, of Jules Verne's "Voyages et aventures du capitaine Hatteras" (the Adventures of Captain Hatteras); Captain Hatteras was based upon the British explorer John Franklin.
