Presentation copy of the work of the Scottish born missionary (1841 - 1901) who did much exploring, pioneering and teaching in Rarotonga and New Guinea, an almost completely unknown place at the time, "To Miss Barbara Simpson, From Tamate himself with love, 1 June 1895". He became quite well loved; his Raratongan name was Tamate. 8vo, frontispiece, 255pp, map, ills. Blue gilt cloth with gilt title and canoe with sail at spine. Spine rubbed, sunned, a bit loose in binding with wear and short splits in hinges. Internally very good. Previously owned by noted anthropologist Mervyn Meggitt with his signature. Meggitt was a noted Australian anthropologist, recognized for his research on Papua New Guinea and Aboriginal Australia. Item #18380
