Nematodes, Mostly Australian and Fijian, report in Department of Agriculture, New South Wales. Miscellaneous Publications, No. 13.

Sydney: F. Cunninghame & Co, 1893. Presentation copy, signed by the author at the front cover to Prof. B. K. Emerson. Nathan Cobb (1859 - 1932) is regarded as the "father of nematology" (the study of unsegmented worms), in the United States. This volume has plates of the banana nematode, a very important parasite which also attacks sugarcane, coconut, avocado and coffee. Cobb was the first to describe the burrowing nematode (Radopholus similis) in 1891, of critical importance to banana growers around the world as it causes crop losses of up to 60%.

Professor B. K. Emerson (1843-1932), to whom this volume was given by Cobb, was a prominent New England geologist, graduate of Amherst College, later Professor of Geology at Amherst and President of the Geological Society of America; his mineral collection is at Amherst. This work is Cobb's second, with many plates showing cross sections of worms. Large 4to, 59pp, unopened, 7 plates. Printed paper wrappers, titled in black at front cover, little dusty and rubbed at edges. Very good condition. Item #18571
