The scarce and important edition of the first annual report of the U.S.G.S. describing its plan for the organization and publications to be. This is the only edition to have a fold out color map by Julius Bien "Map Showing Divisions of the U.S.G.S. Geological Survey 1880". King served for only one year as director, but is credited with providing the U.S.G.S. with a solid foundation from which the department could grow.

8vo, 62pp, folding color map of the United States. Bound in maroon library binding, gilt title & library shelf number on spine, de-accessed from the Vassar library with their bookplate on inside cover & perforated library name on the upper title page. Originally published in printed paper wrappers, this copy lacking the front wrapper but retaining the back wrapper.

Overall a good plus copy with the map in very good condition, without any library markings. Lithographed map in color, 28 x 19.5" plus margins. Closed tear on one fold; another small closed tear at binding edge, both archivally repaired. OCLC: 83698924 locates 4 copies. Good + overall. Item #19069
