Early New Zealand testament and psalms printed in the Maori language, a copy belonging to Captain James Barton, who served with the 65th Regiment at Taranaki during the Maori War of 1860-61. With a loosely inserted tract about the service used by the Bishop of London to admit three Catholic priests as converts to the Church of England (published by Colenso under his pseudonym Aroha Pono), bifolium, pp 3 -6. 8vo, 371pp. Text in two columns. Printed by Harrison and Son, London Gazette Office, St. Martin's Lane. Brown leather, gilt title at spine. Covers & spine quite rubbed, front board wobbly, but attached. Internally, slight insect damage to early and late lower margins not affecting text. With the previous owner signature, James Barton 1860. Binder's ticket (Watkins) at front paste-down endpaper.
