THE TAI RACE. Elder Brother of the Chinese. Results of Experience, Exploration and Research.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa: The Torch Press, 1923. First edition. Hardcover. Dodd spent 33 years as a missionary to the Tai people in Siam, Burma and China. There is no access to Tai Lue (China) historical records since none are archived in China, making Dodd's highly detailed descriptions of life there invaluable. He notes for example that the Tai people along the Mekong Delta were literate and avid readers: "Never before, in any place, have I met such receptivity, as well as such unbridled curiosity. . . . They take books, they beg books, they clamor for books. (p188). Dodd relays a great deal of sociological and anthropological information. Included is a comparative Tai vocabulary and a table of important historical events. 8vo, xxi, 353 pages, frontis +11 pages of illustrations with 56 small black & white printed photos.
